SSL-1 replacement.. need a piece of advice..

Hi guys,
first of all I'd like to say that I love the vintage vibe of my SSL-1's. I just want to change few little, but noticeable things, that I don't like. So I need neck and middle pups, that would be:

a) slightly less trebly and harsh (especially on the 2 thinnest strings)
b) little livier when overdriven so that I can get those, I like to say, Gilmour's tones

You guys have any ideas? I thought of Texas Hots but their character is different. Maybe Surfers are livier and have their high end more balanced??
Please share your thoughts... :D

Alnico Pro 2 neck & middle ....

Twangbaber bridge ...

Re: SSL-1 replacement.. need a piece of advice..

Although I've neverd used them I heard that they might change the character of my tone, which is not my intention.. I want to be VERY close to SSL-1's tonewise, only with those two changes :D
Take care

Re: SSL-1 replacement.. need a piece of advice..

Try rolling back the volume or tone control just a little........worth a try.

Re: SSL-1 replacement.. need a piece of advice..

Gilmour has alot of presence on his oldstyle singles, as BBill says, play around with the toneknob:)
I use mine all the time on my strats.
And my old SSL-1's are not going anywhere, just like my APS-1's:D
There might be "better" singles out there, these pretty much does the job bigtime, and I have tried alot of singlecoils, and these two types always stays on.

The Five-Two set is really great and nails exactly what you are describing...

The A2 magnets on the high strings will soften up the treble for you and the Bridge pickup is wound slightly hotter for a great tone when overdriven.

Re: SSL-1 replacement.. need a piece of advice..

I'm not a big Gilmour afficianado, but I'm pretty sure he mainly uses his bridge pickup for most everything.

Sometimes he blends in the neck pup to thicken things up.

I did not know this! But makes me happy I'm adding a neck on/off switch to the pickguard I'm building!

Re: SSL-1 replacement.. need a piece of advice..

I'm thinking of going with a master tone and a blender pot on my Legacy.

Re: SSL-1 replacement.. need a piece of advice..

Blender pot is surely a nice idea ! :D I want to try it myself as soon as I have an opportunity..
About the pup: Rolling back the volume or tone knob isn't really a sollution.. Indeed it can tame some of the harsh frequencies, but does it add life to my tone? Definately not!
I've never tried or heard five-two, you guys have any clips??

No one says: "Surfers"? I'm suprised.. ;)

Re: SSL-1 replacement.. need a piece of advice..

I'm waiting on Artie to come up with a schematic for me for my Legacy. Going for a push-pull on the 1st tone to give middle and bridge in series and a blender pot on the 2nd tone to bring in the neck. I reckon that'll cover most things for me.

Re: SSL-1 replacement.. need a piece of advice..

does anyone on the forum sells prewired pickguards.. I mean with a swich, master tone, and blender knob, master volume for example?

Re: SSL-1 replacement.. need a piece of advice..

APS-2's are just a bit warmer & fuller than SSL-2's IME. Might be just the ticket, but I haven't tried the 5-2 set.

You've probably already tried this, but have you experimented with the height of the pickups and where you pick the strings? Really basic, I know but it might help somebody...

Use bigger strings perhaps, play around with the heights, Jeff Beck uses the toneknob alot, his sound is no dead sound by far:)
Gilmour sounds is mostly from the Hiwatts which make anything sounds huge:D
I would know...hehe

Yeah, I've already tried this.. It's really tempting to try Surfers but I have no idea how they sound compared to SSL-1's.. well, I have no idea how they sound at all :D We'll see, I'm currently working a lot on my rig - modding the cab, changing the wiring in guitar, retubing amp, also going to swap G12T75's for V30-G12H set.. Hopefully the problem will disappear :D
