Hi!
I have a new strat (CV 60's... squeir, but... GREAT GUITAR!!!!) and a changed the neck and bridge pickup. SSL-1 (Neck) and SSL-5 (Bridge)... wowwww! What a amazing pickups! My CV sounds now like a real vintage (50's) guitar on the neck position, and the SSL-5 adds some "balls" to the bridge position!

Now i want to change the middle pickup. I need advice for that! Usualy i don't use the midle position alone, but i use a lot the 2 and 4 position (think Knofler sound). So, what do you think i should buy to middle? Another SSL-1? Another SSL-5?
Som, what is the best?:

SSL-1 / SSL-1 / SSL-5
SSL-1 / SSL-5 / SSL-5

Or for example a diferent pickup on the middle ? (like alninco 2)

Please, can someone advise me?
THANKS!

I have an SSL-5 in the bridge position of my Strat with SSL-1s in the middle and neck. They sound great - as you say, vintage glassy strat with extra punch in the bridge position. I recommend getting another SSL-1. Get one that's RW/RP if you want hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4.

The other simple mod you can do while you're in there (if it's a vintage-wired Strat) is to swap the wire for the second tone control from the middle pickup to the bridge. Then you can fatten up the bridge pickup even more by rolling off some top end when you need to.

I don't have any experience with the budget pickups so I won't comment about them. However, I love my position 2 & 4 tones that I wouldn't risk them with a substandard pickup. Maybe try to find a used one off of the Bay or CL. You could probably get one under $40 if you go used.

SSL-2 for me. Flat poles in the middle position make for more comfortable strumming/picking.

I haven't tried that but it sounds like a good call. Middle pickup can get in the way sometimes! :fing2:
