SSL-1C DG from MJ, really intriguing.

I got these SSL-1C DG, but they are strange in the sense that they don't have an SSL-5 output, but the SSL-1 one, does anyone have any idea what these would sound like? They also seem to have aged Alnico V magnets, I've sent e-mails to the custom shop and they say it is a special David Gilmour wind, but they don't seem any different to the production line SSL-1, except for the fact that MJ winded them, that could be a really big difference, cause we all know she rocks. What do you think?

Welcome to the forum!

I think you have to install them now, and let us know how they sound- it will sure help a lot of people who might be considering them.

Thanks, man, I think I will, it really makes me curious and I will report back!

Yeah, I don't have an answer for you...I'm hoping you can tell ME what they are like!

Look cool. I'm sure there's an extra dose of "MoJo" hidden under those covers. :)

Re: SSL-1C DG from MJ, really intriguing.

If you haven’t installed them, how do you know they don’t have SSL-5 level of output? If you want to know what they sound like, there’s only one definitive way I know of to answer that question.

that looks like a nice set of strat pups but i dont see anything about dg on there

It means Seymour W. Duncan, but what's really odd is that they're 6.3k each and 6.5 on bridge instead of being closer to the SSL-5, which "SSL-1C DG" is supposed to mean, I guess I can only install them.

Re: SSL-1C DG from MJ, really intriguing.

Looks like it could be a mistake or oversight. I would call the custom shop and ask why the custom David Gilmour bridge is measuring like a standard SSL-1 rather than equivalent to an SSL-5.

The thing is I won them in a contest, so I really can't complain, but I just think is really odd, I've sent some mails, but kinda get the obvious answers like "DG stands for a David Gilmour wind" and not something very specific. I'll just install them and see.

Re: SSL-1C DG from MJ, really intriguing.

The SSL-5 isn't really all that much higher output than an SSL-1, but has a much higher output resistance because of different wire used to wind it. I wonder if your set is using the same wire (and therefore lower resistance) to get the same level of overwind on the bridge.

THIS! Don't let unfounded thoughts about "supposed to be..." ruin your impression of them. If they were meant to be the SSL-1/SSL-5 set, then they'd be the SSL-1/SSL-5 set. This is the CUSTOM SHOP "DG" set...not production

Re: SSL-1C DG from MJ, really intriguing.

Not every strat Gilmour owns has a stronger bridge pickup. In fact that is the exception rather than the rule.
