SSL-2/SSL-2/SSL-6 Anyone?

I am going to start experimenting with one of my Strats. I have been exclusively using EMGs and they sound killer with my PODXT but not so cool with my Rivera. My Texas Specials sound better but not quite to my liking. I need something that has good glassy cleans but has a thicker, stronger bridge position. Am I headed the right way with the SSL-2/6 idea?

Thanks,

Welcome to the forum Thomas. I think that combo would sound great. I had two SSL-1's with an SSL-6 bridge for awhile. Loved it, but I wanted a tad less glass, so I upped it to three SSL-6's. I finally settled on 2 SSL-6's and an SSL-3 bridge.

But, as I said, I wanted a bit more "beef" and less glass and chime. Your suggestion should be killer.

btw - If you spend a couple extra sheckles and make that SSL-6 tapped, you can virtually convert it to another SSL-2 at the flip of a switch. Just a thought. One of my 6's and my 3 are tapped.

I agree with Artie. That's a great pickup arrangment. I think the Duncan Custom single is a great bridge pickup for a Strat or similar guitar and compliments a pair of Duncan Vintage singles perfectly.

Does the tapped SSL-6 really sound like an SSL-2 or just "kinda" like it?

I have the SPC mid boost on my EMGs and really like the extra mids and kick it gives me. I would almost be inclined to wire the SSL-6 to run in tapped mode normally (or at least in "quack mode") and then be able to kick in the full pickup for leads.

I knew logging in here would cost me $$$$. :)

I'd say "kinda". :) It definitely takes on a more vintagey tone, but it does have its own character even in tapped mode. But thats a good thing. I still think of it as 2-pups-in-1 for the price of a switch.

Hmmm....that is going to be close then. I need a good vintage sounding bridge, especially in combi with the middle, but also need something nice and strong to punch out higher gain leads.

Also, on these, how much would RWRP kill quack?

My middle SSL-6 is RW/RP. I don't think it kills "quack" at all . . . just noise.
