ssl-4 question

Can the ssl-4 bridge pup be used in all positions. Or do they make a specific ssl-4 wound for neck and middle?

Re: ssl-4 question

from the main site:

"Calibrated set available with RW/RP middle pickup. Many players use an SSL-4 in the bridge position with vintage output pickups, like SSL-2’s, in the neck and middle for tonal versatility."

Re: ssl-4 question

no, but you could get the tapped version for a lower output brighter tonal option

Re: ssl-4 question

You could just get a second SSL4 for the neck and just have it set a little farther from the strings than the one in the bridge. If you want hum-cancelling in positions #2 and #4, you would have to get an RWRP version for the middle.

Re: ssl-4 question

a calibrated sets has graduated resistance, from higher in the bridge, to lower in the neck, and a RWRP mid for hum cancelling in the notch positions

Re: ssl-4 question

Usually but not always. You can make all three pickups the same resistance but use different magnets or wind the coil wider or skinnier and a few other tricks to change the output to fit each position.

Many, maybe most Strat sets tend to have the neck and middle the same DCR and same magnets, the only difference being that the middle is RWRP.

Re: ssl-4 question

Calibrated:
I do this when winding two or more pickups to be used in one instrument. Calibration can be done with the winding or the magnetic field. Generally to calibrate the coils for various positions I use a different number of turns and/or desired winding direction for each pickup position. Winding for an instrument with two or more pickups, the bridge pickup usually has more windings than a middle or neck pickup. The bridge pickup could be wound with 8,000 turns, the middle with 7,800 turns and neck pickup with 7,600 turns in a three pickup instrument.
