SSL 4 with SSL 6’s a good idea?

Hi folks.

Jeroen from Rotterdam here. Nice to meet you all.
My next project is another Strat-like guitar. I’ve made my mind up on everything but the pickups. Except for the bridge. That must be a Quarterpound. Do the SLL 6’s match well with that? I like a good Strat tone, but with more body and power.
Any other suggestions perhaps?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

Yes, the SSL-6 will balance with the QP. Both are thicker and meaner than normal Strat pickups, because of the extra windings. Any time you increase the output of a Strat pickup, it loses a little bit of Strat-ness. It won't quack like a 1950s pickup set, but it won't sound like a humbucker, either. Another option is using tapped versions of Quarter Pounds in the neck and middle, which adds another output wire- you can get a more traditional sound when you want it, yet go for full power when you need it, too.

i like a ssl4 in the bridge with ssl6 in the neck and middle. 500k pots would be my choice for that setup but some might like it darker toned with 250k or 300k pots.

What Jeremy said. I agree.

Thanks.
I already made a guitar with two ssl4’s in a Ritchie Blackmore configuration. With 250k volume pot and no tone controls. Sounds very, very good. I think I will go for the ssl 4&6 combi. And experiment with in series out of phase wiring in positions 2 and 4. For that a set of just ssl 4’s might sound to dark
