Stainless steel strings

Hi all,

I did a bit of searching on this, only really finding occasional comments within threads focusing on other areas. Simple question though...

What are stainless steel strings like? Pros? Cons?

Thanks

Re: Stainless steel strings

Very bright. Higher output. Corrode less..but DO corrode. Keep em wiped. Wounds are tough on frets.

Thanks very much. I will give them a whirl. Plus treyhaislip... Cheers for the tip!

Most welcome! Props goes to my dad, he taught me that trick...makes them last so much longer if you wipe them down everytime you play.

Re: Stainless steel strings

Generally I am fine without wiping the strings down if I am just practicing. Gigging though, if I don't wipe strings down that night then the strings are buggered by the next morning pretty much! WD40 makes sense though.

I tend to sweat quite a bit (and I'm in the American South East which has pretty bad humidty) so I have to wipe mine down or they go the way of the dinos pretty quickly.

Re: Stainless steel strings

They don't add anything I like to hear in my tone. They are very bright and cutting sounding. Great for Metal.
As mentioned, they'll wear your frets faster. They last a good bunch and they're cheap.

Don't know how they compare to the Ernie Ball Cobalts, which are the new thing in bright and loud strings. Cobalts are much more expensive though.

Re: Stainless steel strings

I like stainless steel...in certain guitars. Sometimes it can be a great choice especially for a bright guitar. Why? Because that extra bit of edge and brightness might allow you to turn the Treble and Presence controls DOWN. You benefit by decreasing noise from the amp and are left with a very FAT and punchy mid-range tone that will still cut through the mix.

Give them a try and see if they're a good fit for your style.

Thanks all. I will see how things go with fret wear. It is the increased brightness which I am most interested in as I am curious to see how they go with a guitar that is a bit on the dark side. I will see whether I like them. Thanks all again
