Standard Tele vs ASAT Classic Tribute

I may be beating a dead horse here, but what is the consensus between these two guitars?

Everywhere I look, people are leaning towards the G&L side.

What do you guys think?

Re: Standard Tele vs ASAT Classic Tribute

I would also lean G&L, but they're both great choices. Try both, find the best example of either.

G&L have a few quirks, but they also have a few innovations leading ta better playing guitar.

I couldn't get on with the MFD pickups in mine though.....NOT what I wanted to hear.

That's too bad, the one that I'm looking at online has Alnico V pickups. Same with the USA model.

I just wish the Guitar Center in my area carried G&Ls.

:::EDIT:::
Just checked with my local shop, they don't have any in stock.

I like the G&L's, but you might have other concerns:

resell value?
mod-ability?
Stock sounds?
Is this for a specific sound or many sounds?

I'd like to use it to get a tele sound which I've heard does it better than an actual telecaster.

Not sure on the resale value tho. I'm on the same boat with my sb-2 tribute bass. I only got it to hold me off till I can get my hands on the USA model.

The Tribute Classic ought to be mostly-a-Tele, no MDF pickups and not too many quirks. Can replace pickups with Duncans if needed, but I think G&L does a fine job.

As someone who keeps an eye out for G&Ls (US and Import,) I think the resale value doesn't fall far from equivalent Fender models, and neither have great resale hell, you can get an American Standard Fender for around $600 pretty easy and the lowest US G&Ls I see (usually Invaders) are still around $700 . Mexican Fenders ~$250 , which is near the same floor for Tributes.

Re: Standard Tele vs ASAT Classic Tribute

I own an ASAT Classic Tribute. Got a Stupid Deal at Musians Friend I could not pass up.

I do not own a MIM Tele, but I do have several MIM Strats. IMO the stock Indonesian G&L has better wood, better neck joint fit, better pickups, and better hardware than the MIm Strats.

My only complaint about the Legacy is that the playability right out of the box was awful. I polished the frets with steel wool, strapped on a new set of Daddarios, lowered the action, and now it plays great.

One great and EZ mod was recommended by a forum bro. I removed the master tone and assigned it to just the bridge pickup. That brightened up the neck perfectly and tamed the bridge.

It took some work to get it juuuust right, but I feel like I definitely got my money's worth from G&L.

Re: Standard Tele vs ASAT Classic Tribute

My dad's G&L Tribute came out of the box totally un-intonated and with the radius/action set super high and flat. They didn't touch it as far as setup. Everyone should be able to adjust those things if you ever plan on touching a guitar, though. They have excellent build quality, on par or better than most MIM Fenders.

MIM Telecasters are good too, don't know what pickups are in them nowadays though, ceramic or plastic bobbin alnico? G&L has awesome pickups out of the box, whether alnico or MFD.

Re: Standard Tele vs ASAT Classic Tribute

I bought a G&L ASAT tribute limited, which I later found out means that its only sold by GC, I chose that because it came in white and with standard Alnico Pick ups over the MDF's. I was lucky, we had a local smaller shop that carried the standard ASATs USM and Tribute series. I personally couldn't notice a lot of difference between the two at least least not the multiple $100's difference. Also I played every tele I could get my hands on and the only two I like more than the ASAT Tribuit (with the satin neck finish, I hated the gloss) was a used Fender custom shop they still wanted $1500 for and a Tele Elite series both way out of my price range. If you are going for the honky tele sound I think you can definitely get that out of the MDF pick ups but what I couldn't get was that Creamy rich neck pick up sound, that is why I went with the Alnico, plus the alnico came with the neck pick up cover so it completed the look.

this is it and it's even on sale: http://www.guitarcenter.com/GL/Limited-Edition-Tribute-ASAT-Classic-Electric-Guitar.gc
You can't get a new fender that will compare to this at that price I promise you that!

Re: Standard Tele vs ASAT Classic Tribute

To me, G&L improved on the Tele formula, and would have no problem rocking one (or their Strat equivalent). The G&Ls and Fenders do feel slightly different, so try to play them if you can.
