Star Bellied Sneetches

Re: Star Bellied Sneetches

I like to relic guitars by playing them. Though I do have a strat that was in the middle of getting a new finish, but then I just stopped and decided I liked it as is.

Re: Star Bellied Sneetches

I can see both sides of this debate.

I own an expensive American-made immitation of a 1951 electric guitar. I could not possibly afford the genuine article. I am not that fussed about the fake wear and tear aspects. I just wanted the sound and feel of a Blackguard. I bought a pre-owned Closet Classic. I would have been just as happy with the "NOS" variant.

What I am less keen on is the obviously mass-produced fake ageing on ranges such as the Fender Road Worn series and the JHS/Vintage Icon models. See more than two of them on display in a shop and it will be obvious that the "wear" has been applied using a template.

Ultimately, I take the view that the wear should be earned. The current craze for pre-worn guitars is the equivalent of, say, Idi Amin awarding himself high military honours on a whim without ever having served on a battlefield.

They overcharge for the roadworns but they certainly feel like nice guitars, to me anyways.
