It is possible that it is the chord so try another one. I think it would more likley be a bad or dirty volume or tone pot.... or both. If you feel you can do this yourself go to Radio Shack and buy a can of Spray cleaner/Lube. Open up the guitar to get access to the pots. Turn the volume and tone all the way down and spray a small amount of cleaner into the opening. roll the pots back and fourth a few times then turn the volume all the way up and spry the other side and roll the knobs back and fourth again. What you have is carbon building up oin the wiper of the pot and it needs to be cleaned. If this doesn't work you need to replace the pots.
