Stereo/Mono volume difference?

Is there a big difference in volume between 2x60 watts going into a stero 412 or 120 watts mono going in?

Re: Stereo/Mono volume difference?

120 will be louder. Think of 2 people speaking together at the same volume vs. one person screaming. Now 120 is not double the volume but is louder.

Re: Stereo/Mono volume difference?

Seems like they should be about the same volume. 30 watts per speaker either way.

Re: Stereo/Mono volume difference?

This issue confuses me. In my mind, I see both methods giving a speaker 30 watts, but it seems like 120 mono would be louder.

To rephrase the question, I'll give 2 situations.

Situation A: I have a single 412 cabinet. It is set up in stereo with 2 speakers per channel. Each set of 2 speakers gets 60 watts.

Situation B: I have a single 412 cabinet. It is set up in mono configuration with 4 speakers getting 120 watts.

Which is louder? A or B?

I'd say that assuming you're properly matching the amp's output impedance (16 ohm, 8 ohm, 4 ohm) to the speaker impedance, that they'd be the same. Four speakers pushing 30 watts each, either way.

Re: Stereo/Mono volume difference?

The cab is set up for 1x16 and 2x8 ohms. I'd be matching it right. (different heads)

Re: Stereo/Mono volume difference?

The amp is putting out the same either way, it doesn't really matter but that's not really the point of using stereo anyway.
