Steve Clark settings?

Anyone happen to know by any chance what Steve Clark used for his Marshall settings? I know he used gibson les paul's with "Dirty Fingers" humbuckers

Looking to do something along the lines of his "Hysteria" sound.

thanks
chris

Re: Steve Clark settings?

All I can tell you is that he was smart enough to NOT neglect his mids. There is a great video of the production of Animal on Youtube. I'll try to find it.

Re: Steve Clark settings?

that studio album has so many overdubs and different amps and guitars on it nailing the exact tone may prove hard... try and nail the live tone from that era may make more sense

Re: Steve Clark settings?

Also used 59's

on the "steve clark" website, it said his two main guitars for the hysteria tour were 2 LP customs (a black one and a white one). They had the same pickups, only the black one had a DF in the bridge. The other pickups were "Gibson 1959 Humbuckers," So does that mean they were PAF's? or did Gibson make a RI of the '59? or were they Duncan '59's?

Re: Steve Clark settings?

I got a some magazines and a tour book from back then, and they all say Steve and Phil started using Randall amps. They did use Gallien-Krugers on Love Bites.

Sorry - Subconcious Duncan recommendation. Gibson Classic 57's actually. I'd go 59's.

Gibson '57 Classics (if those are what you are referring to) did not exist at that time. They came out in the early 90's.

Steve used the stock pickups that came in the LP Customs at the time or Duncan 59's (IIRC). He wasn't a heavy gear nut. About the only change made to his white Custom was the addition of the Kahler trem.

Crank up the mids and play away. Don't worry so much about settings because you won't sound like him anyway.

Re: Steve Clark settings?

I'm not sure how much Steve actually played on that album. I have a feeling Phil did most of it. I could be wrong but I'm sure I read that Steve was drunk so much that he couldn't do an awful lot, and he also hated being in the studio anyway.
They used all sorts of guitars for Hysteria, including strats (doesn't Steve play one in the "Love Bites" video? I might be wrong there).

Like other people said, you'd be better aiming for his live tone around that period.

would the A2P i have in the neck of my LP be good enough?

Im in the process of having a dirty fingers put in the bridge.

I have heard a lot of ppl say that a '59 in the neck of a LP can be way too bassy. I used to have a '57 classic in the neck of my LP, but hated it because it was SO overly bassy. Would the A2P i have in the neck now fit the ticket good enough?

what did steve die from anyways? I just know he died sometime in '91 after def leppard's "Hysteria" tour was over.

Yeah, that's fine. The amp and how you get the tone out of it is more important.

'57 Classic too bassy? I find that hard to believe. I own a set and the Classic in the neck is hardly too bassy. Of course, I run them in a Strat so that makes a big difference right there.

I don't believe Steve ever used Duncan's...

I always thought of Steve being much more of a gear nerd than Phil... Just in the breadth of guitars I'd always seen him with. A LP Special in the early videos- Firebirds, LPs...

The knock on those pickups "back in the day" was that they were too thin and ice-picky.

I quite like them in LPs.
