Steve's Special with diff magnet?

I just picked up a new (to me) guitar with a Steve's Special in it. The pup sounds great for solos and stuff, and power chords on the low strings sound awesome. But the thing has no mids , so mid chords such as A tend to get very mushy.. Would a change of magnet benefit it? Thanks

OK it already has a ceramic and is very scooped so rule out a 5(that will make it more scooped!) try a II,or III.
a II or II will bring up the mids but will lower the output from the listed 390MV to approx 310MV

Re: Steve's Special with diff magnet?

I'm not sure about that one.

But bear in mind that the pickup was designed to be used with a mid-heavy amp... like all the Mesa stuff.

Re: Steve's Special with diff magnet?

Mattt has a point. but WLL also makes a good point. a2 mags definitely do add some mids after a switch from a5 to a2. however ceremic mags have more mids than a5 IMO so i dont think it will help much.

hmmm, want something like the steve special but more mids? lets see....maybe a duncan c5?

Re: Steve's Special with diff magnet?

Couple of points here:

1) I have never known Mesas to be mid heavy amps.

2) Try the Megadrive....it is a Steve's special but with an A5 mag....it is a bit warmer apparently and a touch cooler.

the mega drive is so much more balanced and better sounding it is not funny!
I personally would never use a SS unless i had a mid heavy prob.
i dont even like the C 5 which is not as scooped as a SS but still is.
see these higher output scooper pups lack one thing, they have the pulled back mids like a old P.A.F but there is something that sounds MISSING,even though a old gibson P.A.F has pulled back mids like say a C 5 or even the SS the P.A,F still sounds balanced?????
like the blues trem bucker has pulled back mids but they are pulled back only just enough to "BALANCE" with the treb and bass
:cool3:

Re: Steve's Special with diff magnet?

My amp is a PV Ultra plus and it has more bottom than J LO. Maybe Ill pull out the ceramic and try an A4.
If not, the Tone Zone is goin in.. :smack:

Re: Steve's Special with diff magnet?

No man, don´t put the TONE ZONE.
Put a ****ign DROP SONIC ON TEH SLOT, OR MAYBE A SUPER DISTORTION WILL DO THE DEAL.
I HAD ONE PAF PRO AND IT RULES.
****IGNGREAT
YOU SHOULD TEST IT.
