I've got this 90 Explorer 76 that was gigged extensively in the 90s by a Chicago punk rocker. I've left it the way he had it because it's sort of like a time capsule of that time. A lot of Beavis and Butthead, Ron Jeremy, Simpsons and other references on it.

I've got to sell it, along with a bunch of other stuff, but I have a dilemma. If you were going to spend your hard earned money for it, would you consider bidding on it more with stickers on or stickers off?

The Ron Jeremy's Army one kind of cracked me up.

Those probably don't help it's value though if it's going up for auction. I'm not sure what they did to the finish though, because I heard somewhere that stickers mess up lacquer finishes, and if that's a Gibson, that's probably a lacquer finish.

Re: Stickers On or Stickers Off? You Decide.

I'll say stickers off.....but like Pete said...I don't know what you'll find finish-wise under them. I'd take a few off to see what the finish looks like. If it's damaged just get more stickers!

Re: Stickers On or Stickers Off? You Decide.

Personally I always save the stickers for thje guitar case. I don't think I'd be more willing to bid with the stickers on, but good points have been made about the finish. Sell it but note that the guitar may be purchased with or without the stickers on it.

Re: Stickers On or Stickers Off? You Decide.

i personally like the stickers, but most people tend to like their guitars sticker-free when buying

Re: Stickers On or Stickers Off? You Decide.

So Jimmy, when you plan on selling me that yelloe LP Jr. in your avatar????:D:D:32:

Re: Stickers On or Stickers Off? You Decide.

^^ ha I hadn't seen it before, love the girl on it

Re: Stickers On or Stickers Off? You Decide.

On that guitar? Keep them. Really fits it. Totally 80's coolness.

Re: Stickers On or Stickers Off? You Decide.

Stickers off for resale. dont just peel em off, use a citrus based cleaner ,peel up an edge and work it underneath as you pull. it will help ungum them and be less frusterating
EDIT* I changed my mind after looking at the pic again..leave em on it fits the guitar :D

I bet the finished ius screwed after all those years of stickers on a gigging guitar. Unless you want to take the time and $$ to fix it up, just sell it as it is. It looks pretty cool, but reduces the value because its so punk styled. Likewise, all the crap underneath and damage to the finish will also lower the value. Sounds like its not worth the trouble to me.

Re: Stickers On or Stickers Off? You Decide.

I personally HATE stickers on guitars, but like everyone else said... the finish is probably fairly shot underneath. Any way to peel one off on the back or something to see how bad it is underneath?

Re: Stickers On or Stickers Off? You Decide.

I personally wouldn't buy a guitar with stickers on, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who would. I expect trying to remove them will be troublesome. I'd sell it with them on, and really stress them as a selling point - the time capsule thing.

Re: Stickers On or Stickers Off? You Decide.

I like stickers on some guitars, though I typically prefer just one or two nice ones such as a die cut pin up girl. I'd never have beavis and butthead or anything like that.

The guitar does look "punk" in some buyers minds, though how many buyers that actually would appeal to I dont know, probably really cuts your market down.

I wouldn't buy it like that just because I'd then have to strip them all off and its not worth my time.

Re: Stickers On or Stickers Off? You Decide.

You have a lose-lose situation here.

The guitar is kick @$$ looking. That's a lot coming from me. The stickers make the axe. Unfortunately....

It will be a huge pain to take them off, and I'll bet more than one has chewed up the finish. Then all you will have is a beat up explorer. Yuck. Who wants that?

Or - leave the stickers on. Unfortunately...

stickers are a personal thing. Beavis could be a deal breaker. ron could be a deal breaker. Many will want it to go cheap just because of the stickers.

I say leave them. It may take longer to sell for what you want, but I think you'll be happier not going through the pain, and you'll get moe from someone who thinks it's killer than what I'd pay for a beat up explorer.

I really like the bass pro shop sticker....

Re: Stickers On or Stickers Off? You Decide.

Leave 'em on there.

If they've been on there more then a year or two the adheasive will have 'eaten' into the base finish. If you you pulled all the stickers off & managed to get all the gummy residue up without creating a deep gouge, there'd STILL be mucked up spots. It'll never look "right" as if stickers had never been applied, so I say leave it.

Re: Stickers On or Stickers Off? You Decide.

off! even if the finished is ****ed underneath, you can still put your own stickers on instead or get it refinished or whatever

Re: Stickers On or Stickers Off? You Decide.

I would leave them on as I am sure it would be a pain to get rid of them all, and as it has been already mention, you might have bad surprises with the finish is gonna look like at the end of the exercise.

And I don't see why you wouldn't find a buyer that would find this cool. Might take a wee bit longer but... As you said, it is kind of a relic of the 90's punk scene... Calling for nostalgia!

So I say stickers on!
