I have an STK-S4 in the middle position of my Strat. It isn't bad, but it could be better. The highs are always either too much or not enough. I love the pickup for all clean applications except any kind of blues. It does reggae and funk very nicely (and I imagine Jazz would be no problem either). Any use of my wah pedal works best on this pickup on my Strat as well.
There seems to be something missing when used with overdrive though. It's not full enough.
It does somewhat retain the Strat quack, but it's not too much (which I really like about it, I bought the SSL-1 for the vintage tones).
The bottom line is I've only had it for 3 weeks now, so I'm still learning a lot about it. I am sure someone else could probably answer your questions better, but I thought I'd kick in with what I know so far...

I have mixed feelings about the STK-S4. I would much prefer a set of SSL-1's or Antiquities over it.
I found the feel/attack to be quite a bit different than that of a true single coil, it has a choked feel to it.
The sound is excellent, it has a great amount of quack in the notch positions, but does have a less dimensional sound to it than that of a true single.
As far as what it mixes with, that is a good question. Some guys here feel it mixes well with a JB humbucker in the bridge. I'm not sure of what singles would go well with it. It has traditional strat output, so probably any traditional strat pup that isn't hot would go with it (just guessing).

clips of your classic plus sound great, however for myself i feel they lack a little single coil vibe on my american standard, i put my van zandt rock set back in, love the sound hate the hum, i did have a set of vintage rails and i do think the classic staks are better than them.
