STK-S7 model question

Vintage Hot Stack Plus

I was looking at the model combinations on the Stack Plus models and in two places SD's site recommends putting this Vintage Hot Stack Plus in the neck position. (It's also recommended on the Custom Stack Plus page.)

My question is, does anyone know if this pickup only comes in one version or does it come in both a neck and bridge version.

It appears to be one version only. i.e. The beefed up bridge position partner to the regular Stack models. Kinda equivalent to having an SSL-5 with two SSL-1s.

That's what I thought, too.

The reason that I am asking is the one that I have is labeled as a "STK-S7b", almost indicating that there are two different versions. I'm just more curious than anything.

The STK-S6 Custom Stack Plus is the equivalent of the SSL5/6. The Vintage Hot Plus is supposed to be voiced a little different.

I do wonder what's the difference between them. I've talked to a guy who tried the S7 and he described it to me in a way that is pretty close to the way I'd describe the S6.

I think that particular "B" is referring to the color black.

The Vintage Hot is made with the same wire as the Classic Stack Plus, just more turns, more output. It therefore makes a great bridge pickup with Classic Stack Plus neck and middle, or a great neck and/or middle pickup with the Custom Stack Plus in the bridge. or a great middle pickup with the Hot Stack Plus in the bridge and the Custom Stack Plus in the neck.

The difference with the Custom Stack Plus is that it's patterned after the SSL-5 and SSL-6 Custom single coils which use a different wire, and sound different than the Vintage Hot.

Was pretty sure they don't sound the same, although nothing in the description he gave me was different from the way I'd describe the Custom Stack Plus...

So, can you tell us a little more about the way it does sound?

I like to think of it like this: The wire type used on a vintage single coil is kind of like a car in first gear. This is also the same wire used on the Classic Stack Plus. Adding more turns of that wire is like revving the engine up to a higher RPM. That's what you get with the Vintage Hot. The sound is more robust in the mids and low mids. The attack is the same as a Classic Stack, so by default it sounds rounder and fuller because more of the signal is made up of mids and lower mids.

The wire used on the Custom (and therefore Custom Stack Plus) is then like shifting to 2nd gear. The attack comes back, but the whole pickup has more output, more lows and mids, too. It feels a little juicier and spongier to me.
