stompboxes with line 6 spider

anyone have any luck using stompboxes with a line6 spider or spider 2?
neither have an effects loop, and before i buy any stompboxes i want to know what you think

I have an old 2x10" Spider I that I occasionally bring out as a practice amp, and it handles my Hermida OD boxes pretty well.

i just got a spider II 1x12 and i run my effects through it and imo they sound great.
