Storing a head in a safe ...

Now, did I get your attention ?

So, the rig is home after recording, will go back to lock out in few days. But, there is a professional crew working my neck of the woods, last week five homes have been hit during the work hours, places were cased as they new when nobody was home. So, I am thinking of placing my Laney head into the safe for next few days. Now it will be tilted at about 60 digress angle. I am worried about tranny doing something with its weight. Please advise ...

Re: Storing a head in a safe ...

Isnt the transformer in it bolted down with two/four nuts&bolts? Should be fine I think.

Re: Storing a head in a safe ...

Just remember... People ship amps via UPS. If they can survive that they can survive being stored at an angle until the end of time.

^^Yeah, it will be fine.^^

Hopefully that crew isn't wrapping long chains around safes and ripping them out of the house with a truck. Broad daylight ... so what. Some of those f-u-kerz have much larger juevos than brains.

Well, its going to be standing on its side, angle did no happen, not enough space ... hopefully ok ..

Re: Storing a head in a safe ...

Sounds like it will be safer in the safe than out in the open for the next few days, so don't worry about it. It should be fine.

They use golf balls now and roll the whole shebang out the door.

Some people use their amps standing on their sides.

My point about UPS is that UPS abuses packages, flips them around, kicks them, drops them off trucks, etc., and the amps survive.

Re: Storing a head in a safe ...

Transformers DO and HAVE shifted/sagged from their own weight. Ensure the amp is tilted with the transformer closer to the bottom.

I have an old Guitar World lessons cd-rom with Joe Satriani in his home-studio,,,,,,,,,he was using/running his heads on their sides, I guess for space-saving reasons.
Even the one he was plugged into on the video was on it's side.

I saw that too, I believe he was playing them through Palmer speaker Sims in that video. That was during the inception/ of the JSX circa 2004.

Realistically, it would take a long so time to cause sagging, like almost a year I'd say. And that's only if cheap screws or cheap tin metal brackets were used. (Even high end amp makers can be guilty of this)
Doing it for weeks or even a month or two would not have adverse effects IMO.

Re: Storing a head in a safe ...

Why not simply use a couple of small blocks of wood in the appropriate places to take the strain ? Either just squeeze them in or hold them in place with a bit of tape. Assuming the chassis is in a cabinet/ head shell, the blocks won't need to be very big.
