I have just wired in a Rio Grande BBQ in the bridge position of my guitar, sounds great, like a warmer JB, I have a Jazz in the neck, both sound great on thier own but mixed, it is a strange honky thin sound, with a big volume drop, could i have wired the BBQ wrong?. It has 2 wires, one to earth and one on the selector, as I say, they sound great on thier own.

Re: Strange sound???

The pickups are out of phase. The remedy is, either take one of the pickups leads and switch the ground and the hot or flip over one of the magnets in one of the pickups.

Re: Strange sound???

Thanks for the reply, I will do this later today, just enjoying the new pickup at the moment, I will then put the JB in the neck, and hear how that sounds.

Re: Strange sound???

Job done, just reversed the wiring and hey presto it's nice again.
The BBQ is a lovely pickup.

Re: Strange sound???

AH, Problem, mucho earth noise, especially when distorted, seems there is more to it than swapping wires, I have been told to turn the magnets, is this a big job?

Re: Strange sound???

it's not a big job, but in your case it is unnessessary. Switching the wiring to correct phase has the same effect as flipping the magnet to correct phase. If you have a noise problem it is in your wiring/grounding or you have a component issue.

Check all your ground connections first and look for bad solder joints.
