I tried out my new ENGL Savage 120 today, which I had bought on eBay. My other amp is a Peavey 6505. I get a strange whistling sound from both amps, although not as much from the Peavey as from the Savage 120. Let me explain.
Playing the Savage 120 today, I noticed a high-pitched squeal in the clean channel. When touching the strings, it would disappear. However, in the lead channel (with obviously much more gain), the whistling got louder. When playing full chords or holding the strings, the whistling would disappear. When playing palm mutes, the whistling was very loud and also had sort of an after-effect (which means that there was an audible "clang" even after the palm mute was played). Now, this is NO feedback. I use an ISP Decimator in front of the amp, and I know how normal feedback sounds. This whistling, almost sine-like tone has a very rattling, metallic quality to it. Like there's something broken. It sounds like bad or microphonic tubes to me. However, here comes the strange part. As mentioned above, I get this whistling in both my amps! I remember it's been in the Peavey before I even got the ENGL, but it only occurred very infrequently. Furthermore, it was not as half as bad as on the Savage 120. Today I a/b'ed the two amps and got the same whistling again in both amps. This makes me think it's something else than the tubes. I've replaced the tubes in my 6505 several times over the last month, experimenting with the tone. The Savage 120 came with the stock tubes from the previous owner. I also tried another cab. Same phenomenon. What I haven't tried yet is another guitar or without the pedalboard.
Can someone more versed in things technical advise me, please? From the metallic-clanky-rattling whistling tone, I would naturally assume it was the tubes. But on both amps?
