Straplock buttons too narrow gauge

Folks,

I'm trying to fit straplocks to my Les Paul but they're thinner than the original strap button to don't tighten up to the body properly. I've coated the screws in all-purpose strong adhesive and screwed them back in. I'm now waiting for it to set.

Is this a good idea? Should I have packed the screw holes with something or do you think that the adhesive will hold?

Thanks,

Mike.

I would have jammed a few toothpicks in, but the adhesive should be ok. Toothpicks would be less permanent. ;)

The best repair I've found is to fill the hole (tight) with a hardwood dowel cemented in. Let the cement (wood glue such as Elmers is ok) harden, then redrill a pilot hole, and use a longer screw than the original (minimum 1" long, 1 1/4" is better) to secure the straplock.

Toothpicks are ok if you use round pointed ones and tap them in with a small hammer to slightly compress the soft toothpick wood. I've done that very successfully many times. But a hardwood dowel is better.
