Strat body weight

I just thought I would ask for some input from the community on this.

I have a strat which I made from parts. I always felt it was a bit on the heavy side, although I don't have any other strats to compare it to.

Anyway, I had the neck off the other day and decided to weigh it. It clocks in at 5.5 pounds. This is with everything attached (solid steel trem block, trem, pickguard, 3 lace sensors and pots).

Would you estimate the body is closer to the high or low end of strat bodies? I don't want to take it all apart to weigh it.

I figure the trem block alone is about a pound.

Re: Strat body weight

I think mine's like 8 kilos or something....sorry but you'll have to crack out the conversions

Re: Strat body weight

8 kilos is over 17 pounds..

Incidentally, for the edification of the community who helped me build it, here's a photo:

Re: Strat body weight

Right around 8 lbs complete is a weight lots of folks are happy with fpor a complete Start.
Superlightweight ash bodies are at a premeium though. I have a 3.2 pound alder Warmoth body which is extremely light for a full sized Strat body . Id love to hear more on this though.
I like the idea of a heavay body in certain tonewoods liek Maple or Koa.

Check out this body. I won this.

2 lbs 15 oz :D

Everywhere I read I've seen that light weigh ash is supposed to sound awesome so I'm hoping that's true. I haven't assembled the guitar yet. It sounds awesome when I knock on it though.

Is there any truth to the generalizations:
-(swamp) Ash: lighter the better
-Alder: ~4lb mid weight is better
-Mahogany: heavier the better

?

Re: Strat body weight

my 2006 MIM Standard strat is pretty darn heavy and it has some serious sound for what it is!!!! i have a bunch of strats and i somehow always prefer heavy ones....

Re: Strat body weight

My Carvin Bolt weighs about 6-7 pounds including hardware... IMO it's a good solid weight and has an EXCELLENT sound....

Re: Strat body weight

Who cares what it weighs. Does it sound good and play fine to you? If it does, who gives a rats a$$ what it weighs and if it has a heavy body.

If its the weight that bothers you while playing it, get a wider strap and stop being a girly man. LOL!

Re: Strat body weight

it's kind of weird after getting used to heavy guitars when i play a light one it takes me some time to get used to it... i have a parts guitar from the 80's made out of super light basswood... the thing is air!!!! the thing sounds so super thick it's scary!!! but it feels like such a toy! I messed it up by installing a FRO on it... i'm thinking of pulling a 360 and glueing in some basswood and hope i can regain some of what i lost!

but out of my Fenders i find i love the heavy ones! i don't have any in swamp ash yet... mine are all alder and poplar

I know that many of the vintage (50-60's) strats fully loaded with the neck, pickups, hardware, screws, and everything are 7.5 - 8 pounds.

now i am curious to know what my strat weighs. I would have to imagine right around there.
