Strat bridge pickup question......

I have a Strat Plus that has an Antiquity in the bridge. Its non-custom, with output around 6.7kohm. I love it. HOWEVER, I have a Voodoo Strat, and I want to get a different tone from the bridge. The tone needs to be a big and clear type of Strat without darkening the mid's. I want it to be bright but even, without too much clang in the bass. The highs need to be bright, but round, and the lows need to be tight but not too much CLANG!!

I'm not interested in a Hot Rails (too much output, too dark). I don't think the Cool Rails is going to do it either (its billed as a vintage humbucker type of tone).

What do you recommend?

Thanks,
Randy

Re: Strat bridge pickup question......

If you want a different sound that you have with the Antiquity, and you want to stay with a single coil, you might try a Twangbanger, if you do want to go with a Single Coil sized bucker the Cool Rails might be good...also, just so you know, a Cool Rails and a Little 59 are the same pickup except for the poles. Lew also says that a JB Jr neck pickup is great in the bridge of a Strat, and again Lew suggests a Fralin SP43 in the bridge of a Strat...Good luck!

Re: Strat bridge pickup question......

I tried an SP43 from Lew a while back. It didn't have much high end clarity at all. Maybe it was a bad one, but I didn't like it. Maybe an SP42 is the way to go. I only need something for the bridge position, the others are fine.

Re: Strat bridge pickup question......

the twangbanger is that bright, but not too bright, sound that i like......its high are fairly round like you say.... you may need to adjust the mids down a tad though, as it does have a good amount of mids, and the bass is tight and not too "clangy", at least how i hear it.....and its plenty big sounding

Re: Strat bridge pickup question......

its above vintage, but not high output.....would a little below 9k i think?......it is just a little louder than a strat neck or middle pickup, so its a nice small boost

Re: Strat bridge pickup question......

Randy,

The Twangbanger is somewhat Tele-like but still mostly Strat. It has plenty of highs, but they seem a bit fatter and rounder than a standard Strat bridge SC. The mids are more pronounced than most Strat SC's, but not at all overbearing. The lows are moderate but surprisingly tight compared to other A2 SC pickups I've heard. Being primarily a Tele player, I don't find the output to be all that high, but it is certainly hotter than a vintage Strat SC. Depending on how hot you want, you might check out the 5/2 Nashville Studio custom bridge Strat SC. I haven't heard it myself, unfortunately, but the resonant peak and EQ look good on paper.

I have a Twangbanger in the bridge of a California Series Strat wtih SSL-1's in the neck and middle. We could probably arrange to meet at Memphis Guitar & Amp Works sometime towards the middle of next week so you can give it a spin, if you're not in a huge hurry.

Re: Strat bridge pickup question......

Hey Randy, I'll echo the thoughts on an A2 mag pup. The twangbanger for more cut, for less but still a very quacky sound try the APS'. I see you live in Memphis, we should get together sometime! :)

Re: Strat bridge pickup question......

the custom surfer bridge is still bright but a little warmer and bigger on the bottom. the mids are still very stratty.
the ssl6/7 has a more aggressive tone with more output and meatier mids than the surfer
the twangbanger is a great pup but has thicker mids and a smoother top than most lower/medium output strat pups

Re: Strat bridge pickup question......

Jb Jr could give that sound i think..

as single coil SSL-1 or SSL-5...

Re: Strat bridge pickup question......

Sounds like you need a Fender Texas Special! From your sound description it sounds like it would fit the bill!
