Strat Humbucker split idea

Did an angel or a demon just whisper this in my ear :

how about a humbucker in the bridge position, and whatever in the other two;
pos 1 of the switch is the humbucker as humbucker, 2 HB split with the middle, 3 middle, 5 neck and here it comes :

4 : I never use the middle and neck, so could I use that for the HB split into single coil?

Testify!

Jan

ps Can you use a Vintage Rails bridge in the middle position? And why (not)?

Re: Strat Humbucker split idea

It.... could......WORK!!!

You proabably will have to get a mega switch, but I'll see i I can think up a way to use the stock 5-way...

Thanks. And about those Vintage Rails : can a bridge work in the middle position?

Re: Strat Humbucker split idea

Probably won't work (with stock 5-way) but there's got to be a way to do it on the Super or Mega Switch.

OK, I could not come up with a way to do it with a stock 5-way switch; you will have to use a Mega switch. You will end up using only 2 poles of the 4-pole switch.

A quick-n-dirty schematic is attached.

Position 5 = Full on Bridge HB
Position 4 = Split HB & Middle
Position 3 = Middle
Position 2 = Bridge split
Position 1 = Neck only

You'll have to figure out the correct wire color codes yourself. Good luck.

I have no experience with rail pickups, but electronically it shouldn't make any difference. Don't know about the sound.

The neck and middle position is one of my favorite positions. This is what I would do....

leave the 5-way switch alone and get a push-pull tone switch which you can wire to make the bridge position split when you pull it up. So you will be in position 1 and then just pull up on the tone control to make the bridge split.

Re: Strat Humbucker split idea

If you're getting push/pull pots, get all three. Use two to go from series to parallel for your bridge humbucker and neck rail and use the other one to wire your neck and bridge pickups on at the sane time or all three on at the same time.

Re: Strat Humbucker split idea

One note about installing push-pull pots: Some Strats are not routed as deep under the pots are they are under the switch, & there's not enough depth for the push-pull pot. Check that first.
