Im looking to but some new pickups on my mexi strat. Im thinkin about going humbucker in the bridge. HSS configuration. Its already routed in the bridge so no worries there. Im looking for a good distortion tone. like zeppelin, metallica, etc. and for the singles I want cleaner tones. I still want to keep the versatility of the strat somewhat, but i want more lovin in the bridge What would you suggest. Ive had some suggestions over at musicianforums.com here they are.

Neck: Fender Noiseless
Middle: Fener Noiseless
Bridge: Semour Duncan JB, Dimarzio Super Distortion, Dimarzio Fred, Duncan Distortion, Duncan Custom.

Any other suggestions? I ve been told that i cant put actives mixed with passives, so i cant go actives.

Re: Strat Pick ups

I'd go for a Duncan 59 Trembucker and a pair of Duncan SSL-1's.

The 59 Trembucker will be similar to the bridge paf in a original 59 Les Paul and the SSL-1's are very similar to vintage Strat pickups like those used by SRV, Mark Knopfler, Eric Johnson, etc.

If you want to go hotter than the 59 TB, the Screamin Demon would be a good choice but it'll be stronger than what's in Jimmy Page's old Les Paul and also might start to overpower the vintage style SSL-1 single coils.

I'm with Lew and in addition I'm going to recommend a look at Alnico 2 magnets. APS-1 neck and middle and a Custom Custom for the bridge. It will put you in the metal territory but is not so high in output that you can't get Page tones. If you have a high gain amp then an Alnico 2 pro or Pearly Gates.

Re: Strat Pick ups

everything said here is good stuff...that said, it sounded like you wanted no noise...SSL-1's as well as ASP-1's are true single coils, and therefore are noisy...if you want it noiseless, I would say a pair of vintage rails or duckbuckers in the neck and bridge and a 59 trembucker in the bridge, if you want something hotter that a 59, try a Custom 5...but be warned...the Custom 5 might overpower the neck and middle pups...just like Lew said!

I was thinking that set too...maybe APS-1 or 2 and a CC. Good call! I just know the SSL-1/59 TB works well as I've used it myself. That's why I recommended it. Lew

Re: Strat Pick ups

I too like the APS flats in the neck and middle and I love the CC in the bridge of a strat type guitar.

On a related note, has anyone here tried the Vintage Stacks for strat? I know they have Alnico II poles and would probably match well with a humbucker at the bridge, but I have no personal experience with them.

Re: Strat Pick ups

all i want is a HB that does a great versatility in distortions for metal and hard rock and in the singles i want just normal great all around pick ups.

Re: Strat Pick ups

which one of the above pups would be the most versatile, but slightly on the harder side.

I would go with the SSL-5's neck/middle and a CC in the bridge.
Tone to the Bone. :)

Re: Strat Pick ups

The '59b works nice in my MIM strat (bridge) - hard enough for meee
The APS1 alnc2 pro stags are sweet ahead in mid and neck

Re: Strat Pick ups

If you want to go the extra step (you've mentioned metal, yet want decent cleans), perhaps try:

Vintage rails stacked hum in the neck
Vintage rails stacked hum in the middle
and Custom Custom, which can do really good rock tones in the bridge, but more buttery than the others.
