Strat pickup Q regarding D.C Resistance

Righto

I removed the bridge pickup from my usa strat because i found it far too bright and spiky (replaced with a HB). Measured it, reads 7.5 kohms(overwound), now i measured the neck single earlier that came up about 5.8 kohms.

Q: If i put the 7.5kohm bridge pickup in the neck postion would the tone change that dramatically? I want a bit more fire/chewyness in the neck and slightly less brightness compared to the 5.8k one currently there.

One would hope that the bridge PU of a calibrated three pickup set would offer more output, more midrange and slightly less treble than the original neck position PU. I have no idea whether that would be too "dramatic" a change for you? The only real test is to wire it into circuit and give it a go.

Try it and then tell us?

Yeah, give it a try. I have used Strat pickups more overwound than that in the neck position and they sounded great.

Try it and tell us, cos I'm thinking of trying something similar if I can't find a cheap neck single coil.

Re: Strat pickup Q regarding D.C Resistance

i tried to video both pickups playing exact same licks but the stupid computer failed to record the audio of the first one grr, i only realised after i had recorded the second clip duh.

So only by my ear and memory to judge, the difference is quite minimal, but i did notice a slight hi treble tame and a slight push in lower mids. The 7.49k pickup is now measuring 7.23k after being wired to the circuit and measured via the output jack. Think it sounds better though. Or maybe i'm just mad:burnout:

Re: Strat pickup Q regarding D.C Resistance

Put that guitar away for a few days. Come back to it and see whether it now sounds different to the way that you remember that it always used to.

I have a mongrel Fender MIM Stratocaster. I tried both Fender Am Std single coils and Custom 54s. The latter set sounded meatier despite being of nominally lower DC resistance on the neck and centre PUs.
