The middle pickup rules for:

-playing with fingers rather than a pick (slappin' & poppin')

-fretting notes up higher than the 12th fret, where it starts to act more like the neck PU, due to it's proximity...

-and of course pos's 2 & 4!

I haven't had that problem. My pick doesn't go deep enough to touch it, unless the pick was raised up really really close to the pickup.

And the middle pickup sounds great, even on its own. I love it!

As for the knobs, the volume knob used to be in the way, cause I used to anchor my pinky. But a couple of months ago I started to float my hand, and so the knob is no longer a problem.

some of you guys seem to pick and strum like maniacs!

I anchor my elbow at the top of the forearm contour and pick between neck and middle pickups. For strumming i play around there too. I have never touched the volume knob by accident.
