Strat PU, Cover on, cover off?

Does it matter? I just got an Alnico Pro II and it doesn't have a cover. Just wondering if I really need one? I guess it would leave the wire exposed on the coil. Is that a problem? I mean, as long as I don't spill a beer in it?

You want a cover. If you're replacing an existing single-coil, use the cover off the old one. Leaving the coils exposed is not a wise thing.

Fair enough. Thanks! The reason I asked is because as it turns out, this PU that I snagged on Ebay is F-spaced and the black covers I have are normal spaced and I only have a cream colored F-spaced one which cosmetically isn't what I want. Although F spacing isn't what I need on this guitar, it seems to be working fine even though the poles are misaligned from the strings. Oh well, I'll probably use it for a few months and then ditch it and get one w/ proper spacing. Dang Ebay!

Wait a minute. Are we talking the A2Pro Single Coil APS-1/2 or the A2Pro Humbucker APH-1? There is no F-spacing or Tremspacing when it comes to single coils. That only applies to humbuckers. If the cover fits, it fits.

What pickup did it replace? Is it a Fender Strat?

Hmm, that's weird. It's a APS1 single. Well, I tried putting the cover from the Dimarzio HS3 that it replaced on it and it wouldn't fit because the poles on the SD are spaced farther apart. I tried the cover from the stock PU that came on the guitar (a recent Squier Tele) and it wouldn't fit either. So, I had this old dead single coil that someone had given me awhile back and took the cover from it and it fits. It's the cream one. So I don't know what the heck is going on other than the polepieces of this thing doesn't line up w/ the strings whereas the HS3 was fine. Well, actually the E, A, D, and G line up fine. The B is a hair off and the high E is quite a bit off.

Hmm. What brand/model guitar? I have a APS-1 as well and it lines up well in either my Strat or my homemade Frankenstrat, although it's reverse angled in the homemade.

Check the string spacing of your guitar. Just measure from the middle of the low E saddled to the middle of the high E saddle. Then measure the HS3 and the APS-1. Same way, middle of low E pole to middle of high E pole. Post the measurements in millimeters. Also measure the string spacing where it is in the guitar, right over the pickup (high E to low E).

Black.
As for the measuring, don't have time right now. Will get on that when I get a chance. Thanks guys!

You could leave the cover off and put some heavy black tape on the exposed coil to protect it.
