Strat pups (A4?)

Hey guys

I'm trying to decide on what to do with my strat pickups.. I've mentioned my current set before.

Basically A5 all round. 6.2K neck, 5.8K mid with awg43 wound on top till 7.5k, and 7k bridge.

Now I am looking at smoothing out and sweetening up the neck pickup.. At first I was looking at the 5/3 split. But then I started wondering about A4s being used in strats... I haven't seen many sets with them, less than A3 at least. Was considering a 4/3 split on the neck and a 5/4 split on the bridge.

Anyone got experience with A4s in strat?

Thanks folks.

Mike are you talking Humbucker full sized magnets or the A4 pole magnets in the single coil pickups....I'm not really sure what you're asking?

Re: Strat pups (A4?)

Sweeter tones generally come from A3, as it has the top end still like an A5, but the weaker magnets means it isn't harsh. A4 is balanced eq and much stronger. I think sweet wouldn't necessarily be the word I'd use to describe an A4.

Curious pickups you've got as standard. I might have thought the bridge would have been the more overwound, and even with the dual wire gauge.

There are few A3 singles about, and I know of none with A4 from SD (although Fralin loves a4 and might be the best for a stock pickup). One of our forum bro's runs Zhangbucker, and he'll be able to wind anything you want at a reasonable cost

@Strat, singles. Don't think split magnets work as well on buckers ;)

@Alex, they're a custom wound set as well. I've worked with Zhang in the past actually. I love A3s in the neck pos, but I'm not sure if A5 or A4 would match it better on the bass strings. The more I think about it, the more a 5/4 split in the bridge could be really cool. Similar attack to A5, more mids, less treble.
