Strat wiring, problems with Tone

Hi everybody

Yesterday I tried to change the capacitor of my strat (Fender CIJ 54´s Reissue). I just changed the capacitor, but I don´t know what may have happened, the neck Tone pot started to work as a volume pot (at 0 you can´t hear any sound from the neck pickup).

It happens both in Neck and Neck+Middle positions.

PS.: 1) All the guitar cavities and back of the pickguard are shielded with copper tape.
2) As you can see, I did the star-grounding based on Guitarnuts.
3) The switch that makes the Neck+Bridge connection is fixed on a metal piece that is held by the volume and tone1 mounting shafts.
4) There´s no problem with the pots and the 5-way switch: I tested them and they are working allright.

Here´s my wiring schematic:

Does anybody know what´s happening here?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Strat wiring, problems with Tone

I can not the see the schematic as I am at work but I was wondering what is the value of the cap you just placed in?

Would you also be able to provide photos of your cavity so we can what actually you did?

Edit: Wiring related questions are mostly asked and answered here in the pickup lounge

Cakire82, I don´t have a camera here now, so I can´t post actual photos of my guitar wiring.

The cap I placed in is .047uF, or 47k. The one I replaced was .01uF.

Sorry about my mistake, I don´t know how I could move this thread to the Pickup lounge.

Thanks anyway.

Re: Strat wiring, problems with Tone

did you ground the third lug to the back of the pot? or is a wire from the thrid lug touching the pot?

Re: Strat wiring, problems with Tone

Hi jake,

I haven´t ground anything to the backs of the pots, all the grounds are running by wire to a star-grounding.

It does not matter where you ground them but if matters if you don't ground them

3rd lug should be grounded.

Re: Strat wiring, problems with Tone

I don´t understand...
Are you saying that the 3rd lug of the T2 (Middle Tone) pot should be grounded? Or the 3rd lug of the T1 (Neck Tone) pot?

I think it should look like this

I believe it is the volume pot Jack was mentioning. But if this was the case issue should have occurred in all positions.
So until I go home and check your schematic I am clueless. Sorry I could not help right away. Cavity photos also will help if you could post them.

Re: Strat wiring, problems with Tone

Oh, now I got it.
Yes, the 3rd lug of the volume pot is grounded, it´s going to the star-ground.
The issue just happens in position 1 (neck) and 2 (neck+middle).

Re: Strat wiring, problems with Tone

Hi everybody,

I desoldered all the wiring and started all again from zero. I did the same wiring scheme that I posted here before, but with one little change:

On the middle leg of the N+B switch, I soldered the neck hot wire, and from this same middle leg I put another wire that runs to the 5-way switch. It worked!

Thanks for all your help!

Heeewww :) Great. Rock it loud man!

Re: Strat wiring, problems with Tone

well the neck tone was acting like a vol because its ground had a direct path to the star ground, the tone cap should have been wired with the same leg of the cap wired to both tone pots as is shown in the diagram cakire82 posted.
