Stratocaster "upgrade"

Ok, Hello everyone, about a month ago I got a message that my jackson dinky I had ordered, had arrived.(could not decide between a strat and dinky, but since i already had a jackson bass i chose what i knew i like)
And then I see this awesome sale I have never seen before( and happend on the exact same day as I was going to get my dinky), I think its a sale that happens once in ten years or so...
One of those items on sale is a stratocaster, a classic vibe squier I really want so I would have both my dinky and a strat I had a hard time to choose between, ( this sale was about running to the item you wanted as fast as you could and grab it before anyone else would) and I was lucky enough to buy this strat!
It is a candy-apple red 50's vibe strat with coloured headstock and maple fretboard.
Now i have had it for a while, and i feel it does not quite match my style, and just not my tone (im pretty much a hard rock/metal guy)
So I have been thinking of making some small changes, like pickups, I was thinking of just doing a one pickup strat, and since this is a alder bodied guy, i was thinking going for a bit darker tone, kinda like the synyster gates kind of tone...so I am thinking about an Invader (with coil tapping), what do you guys think? I think this strat is routed for a humbucker bridge(hope so) anf was thinking about just going for plain one tone(coil-tap) and...i dont know, maybe a killswitch, or just a volume...not sure what to use as potentiometers goes, if i should use 500k those 1moh or whatever they are called.... Also, any suggestions for what i could do to make the entire strat to look a bit darker? Not as bright eyecatching color, without repainting the whole thing. Was thinking about black pickguard, and maybe a sticker or two...
Want a clear tone with great distortion tones, and not a 100% crap clean tone out of it, im using this strat with peavey bandit, ernie ball 10-52 strings, the current single coils seems to be a bit thin, warm and too ear-piercing on the high end for me...going to play stuff like Avenged sevenfold( loads of leads and much rythm. So would like both clarity and bottom end) slipknot, stone sour, slayer... and so on ( sorry for my looong text guys [emoji16] )

Strat and cavity:

Re: Stratocaster "upgrade"

There are guys on here who know more about this than I do, but I would say to consider this: changing the magnets in your pickups may change their tone in a way that suits your playing better. It's much cheaper and easier than buying new pickups, and if you ever wish to sell it, it can go back to stock rather easily.

Fender Classic Vibe instruments use Tonerider pickups featuring (where appropriate) rod magnet polepieces rather than studs and underslung ceramic bar magnets. Their bobbins do not permit the easy sliding out of the individual rod section magnets.

Can the Invader be ordered with red bobbins? That would be cool as ....

Re: Stratocaster "upgrade"

I was thinking of just doing a one pickup strat,

A single hum strat makes a great lead instrument. You have lots of options for the bridge bucker.

You could also go HSS to better meet your styles, but it would still be able to do almost everything that we use traditional strats for. You could use 2 SSL-1s and an Invader or something. Maybe that would be duplicating your Jackson too much?

Re: Stratocaster "upgrade"

Yeah, was thinking red bobbins too, or black with chrome pole pieces....was thinking about having this as one pickup strat to du rythm and lead, single ones there right now are a bit too bright and warm for my taste, and my plan was to just get a new pickguard for it and have invader there, with perhaps some stickers on pickguard, and if i would need it in normal condition for some reason i would just switch out the pickguard and have it with stock looks, dont really think i am ever going to sell it though...
The important thing i am not sure about right now is...if the bridge is routed for humbucker (I could just rout it myself ofc, but I would like to avoid that 'cause its really well shielded right now, and I like everything to fit right in)

Well, i dont mind having two guitars that sound similar,( less finetuning on the amp when i switch between!) And as I am happy with the jackson( thinking about putting some distortions with gold covern in it tho, its satin black basswood with black hardware) i would not have a problem with them being a bit similar.

Re: Stratocaster "upgrade"

is the bridge is routed for humbucker?

It is self-evident from your photographs that your Squier is routed for HSS pickups. The only restriction is that your chosen replacement humbucking pickup must have short elevator screw lugs.

I strongly suggest that you buy a new scratchplate, cut for the combination of pickups that you intend to install. This will leave the original scratchplate intact for ease of reverting to stock spec in the event of deciding/needing to sell. Additionally, the Invader humbucker really needs to run via A500k pots. It will be tidier all round to create a fresh pickup and wiring assembly specifically geared to the new pickup.

Too bad. That may have been an inexpensive solution. That's what's great about this site. There is a lot of pick up know-how here. This place is a great resource of information for us guys on the back side of the learning curve.

Include me in that. The day that I stop learning is the day that I might as well give up.
