Strats, David Gilmour...

Re: Strats, David Gilmour...

Aaaaah the joy of gassing. I also had a Gilmour obsession, which led to getting a strat. No problem there, as it's such a lovely guitar. (shape, feel, weight) The sound is so unique. Anyhow, you're convinced already. Visit here if you havent been already. It has great info. http://www.gilmourish.com/

Feeds the gassing, and the obsession. And shows that you're not alone

Re: Strats, David Gilmour...

I think when it comes to Floyd the amp is more important then the guitar.. The guitar should be a strat or some sort of single coil guitar but the amp has to be loud clean and have a great Low End..... I set up a bunch of pedals trying to get that Floyd sound thru my Peavey Classic 50's clean channel. That amp does not have enough low end so i boosted it with the Boss GE7 and it got too noisy.... A single coil strat, overdrives and distortion, plus the GE7 all add a bunch of hum..... David had a bunch of tech's quiet his gear down over the years... Customized this and that. Lucky bugger! Even his Hiwatt was not stock towardsthe mid 70's.... See www.musicground.com and go to the UK Hiwatt site www.hiwatt.co.uk , check out the David Gilmour model they sell! It is a modiffied Hiwatt and Hiwatt UK is a different company then the uSA one and you could not buy UK Hiwatts here until this summer.... They have opened some sort of deal and now you can get UK Hiwatt models in the USA again.

PS Music Grounds owns Hiwatt UK and they also sell the great Townshend moddified head as well. The Wholigans used their amps on a tour of the UK and i flew over for some of their shows. That Hiwatt Rocks!!!!

I read on another forum that Gilmore used a high output P-90 or SC to bring out the nuances of his incredible bending work on the Wall.

Is there truth to that assertion that a higher output pup can add character to big slow bends or is that just a load of BullS###?

It's all Gilmore in the end?

Well, a higher output pickup will reproduce dynamics that you might not hear with lower output units, but you can always get the same push or sustain from a vintage type by using a booster pedal or a compressor.

I think what the interview you are thinking about is where David Gilmour tells that the solo on Another Brick in The Wall is played on an old mid 50's Les Paul Goldtop with P90's straight into the board, no amp.... I have an unoffical dvd of Floyd doing The Wall at Earl's Court 1980 and David uses the LP for the solo live!

Re: Strats, David Gilmour...

Lots of good posts here,...so,...my 2 cents would be:

Any decent strat w/ a couple Seymours in it will get you in Gilmour land.
Depends on your budget. Those HWY 1 series play good and aren't too expensive.

And just for the sake of argument I think Page only used a Tele on the 1st Zep and maybe some of the 2nd,..after that he used a LP mainly but still busted the Tele on certain tunes.

:)
