They offer different feel,sound and looks.To me rosewood feels faster, easier to play,has a warmer sound while maple feels a little bit sticky ,is brighter with a faster "attack".Maple looks better.....especially under stage lights :13: :13: :13:

i LOVE the looks of maple necks.. but i dont like the feel of them. i owned a USA fender with a maple neck, had to sell it because i didn't like the feel of the neck.. but man was it sexy...

i find that maple necks tend to have a smoother sound to them.. a more glassy, glidey sound (if that makes any sense to anyone). i find that the rosewood has more of an attack to it, brighter and punchier

I really like the sound of rosewood, but all in all, if you want a strat, its gotta have maple fretboard. Its in the rules of Stratdom somewhere. Alot of guys I know wont play a maple board because its "sticky" man, just get some steel wool and run it down the fretboard to make it all satiny and stuff, the wipe it down with naptha.

All my strats are maple -so I guess I must like maple?? However none of them compare to my old '62 rosewood strat that I had many many years and which I regrettably sold :duh: . Maple boards do give you a brighter, snappier response than a rosewood and you do get that vintage sound. But everyone will have a favourite/preference I just have not found a good enough rosewood fretboard but that is going to change in a couple of months time.

Nothing beats the look and the feel of maple. Play a thicker Tele style neck and you know you're in heaven. It's not for everyone, but to me a simple maple neck is inspiring because it's almost "stripped down" to the bare essentials. Nothing fancy, just one solid chunk of wood (no jokes please).

I've always liked rosewood, but my current Strat is Maple. I have to say that it doesn't make that huge of a difference in tone whether a Strat is maple or rosewood. My current Strat's pretty warm sounding even though it's got maple , and I've had some rosewood guitars that were real ice picks. The Strat I have now is a Fender Standard, and the neck is finished with a thin matte finish, and I've had far less stickiness than I've experienced with more vintage maple necks.
I like the fact that most maple necks are just one big piece of wood. I guess I'm ass-backwards. I like rosewood teles and maple strats.

Having said that, you've forgot to add ebony to that list. While it may not be a very common option, some Strats are offered in ebony. In my experience, ebony seems to have the feel of maple, the sound of rosewood, and looks pretty cool too.

I've had both and definately prefer the bite of the rosewood over maple.

ya the reason for that "sticky" feel on the maple fretboards is because they have some finish on them. for most maple necks, when the finish is put on, its just put right on the fretboard too. with rosewood, you are just playing the wood itself. thats one of the big reasons as to why i favor rosewood.
