Hey i have a electro acustic guitar, and I've always had problems with the strings or the tone.....i dont like how it sounds some times to bright and some times to mellow.

or Maybe im just getting deaf by now

i just put on it some d' addarios "Phosphor Bronze 13-56 Medium" and they are kind of hard to play :15:

what brand and gauge do you use?? and how do they sound.

BTW i mainly play blues and rock

Re: string for an Acustic

I use DR "Rare" Phosphor Bronze in a 12-54 guage... nice and bright, but slinky enough for solo type stuff in necessary, though I also generally play my 22 fret Charvel "Surfcoustic"...

Then again, I´m probably the only guy on earth to play the same guage on acoustics and electrics, most play heavier strings on acoustics than they use on electrics.....

Re: string for an Acustic

I use Gibson Phosphor Bronze 13-56 Strings. Nice sound not,too dark, and just great overall(wouldn't buy their guitars but their strings are great).

Re: string for an Acustic

I use the exact string you are talking about. I use the J17's on all my acoustic guitars. I also use the D'Addarrio XL115's on all my electric guitars. I practice more on acoustic than I do electric. This was causing me some issues when I went from the 13's to the 10's on electric. I decided to put a heavier string on my electric and now I feel more comfortable.

The other issue is when you play acoustic guitar you are generally playing a style of music that is different than electric guitar. You normally are not bending with any real attack like you do on electric. When I play electric I always use a flatpick, when I play acoustic I always pick with my fingers. Different instruments require a different technique. IF you consider the "acoustic" version of Layla vrs the "original" version. You really could not play the original version on acoustic.

I think you are on the right track. A heavier string for acoustic is a good move. You will get better tone because of it and it will also develop better hand/wrist strength and this will make your electric playing better. God Luck!!

Re: string for an Acustic

I've been an Elixir user for the last 5 years and won't switch back.... they last long, are really slinky and sound great. I use the poly-web ones, the gore-tek coating is thicker, making the string a little less "sparkly" or bright, I like 'em better like that. I use them on my yamaha acoustic-electric and on my Taylor... More expensive, but really worth it in my opinion....

Re: string for an Acustic

DR zebra's for me. They are 10-52 (same guage as my electrics; hey, I'm like Zerb! :) ) and are wound with a combination of bronze and nickle, which is a great idea for those of us who use mag pickups from time to time in our acoustics.

Re: string for an Acustic

I use Infelds and Powerbrights. .9-.10 gauge. Those are the best, longest lasting strings I know of. I think they blow away, D'arddios, Fenders, Ernieballs, and those big brand strings. They last FOREVER, their easy to play with, and they dont lose too much tone when you go down a gauge...but their a little pricy. 10 smackers.
