string gauge and harmonics

Obviously, it all comes down to technique, but do the lighter gauges (such as 9 gauge) help the ease of pinch harmonics and tapping, and do they "sing" more? I'm using 10 gauges and they work fine for me, but I was wondering if switching to a lighter gauge would enhance them.

Re: string gauge and harmonics

For me it´s easier to get them to really squeal and sing on heavier guages with a heavy pick.

YMMV, because as you said it´s more a technique issue....

Re: string gauge and harmonics

imo heavy strings have better and more powerful harmonics(just as Zerb said). If it comes to tapping they might be alittle harder to use but when i started learning some tapping i was already using heavy gauge strings, so i never got to know the difference.

Re: string gauge and harmonics

I use 10/60...it is easier to make pinch harmonics with lighter gauges for me ,but i play dropped c ,so i have to use 10/60 to have the right tension. You will achieve a new way to make the pinch harmonics ,with more growl and less scream. But they sound better!!!

Re: string gauge and harmonics

Cool.. I'll probably do a little expermenting with string gauges then. I usually us 10-46's.. I'll give a hybrid 9-46s a shot to see how the lighter gauges work (I defnitely don't want to go down to a 42), then I'll give an 11-46 a try during the next change up. Since Zerb brought up about him using a heavy pick, I'll see if that makes a difference too in the pinch harmonics, since I've been using mediums, probably doesn't make much of a difference.
