String Gauge??

Hi all,

As you may have seen, I have a new guitar arriving in bits tomorrow which I shall be assembling.

However, my dilemma is this:

I'm used to playing 10's on my Strat. The Warmoth is going to be Gibson-scale (24.75"). Should I use 10's or 11's on this one? Any forum bro's have experience on this issue?

Thanks :D

Re: String Gauge??

The one thing that I will say is that the stiffer 11s might help to make your piezo transducer acoustic guitar simulations slightly more convincing.

Re: String Gauge??

personal choice
- heavier has pro/cons

Playability vs Tone

Your call. I almost always play the same guage unless I'm tuning down. But I like the same tension "feel"

I don't think the scale makes that much difference. 11's will feel way heavier. I'd stick with 10's. But your opinion may vary.

Re: String Gauge??

You just have to go with whatever feels right...that can and will vary from player to player, guitar to guitar and will depend on the ddesired results.

FWIW, I use the same string gauge for the most part on all my guitars...a 24 3/4 scale guitar shoudl feel more slinky to me than a 25 1/2 scale guitar so I let it w/o trying to fight it. The only time I use different gauges is if I'm going for a completely differnet feel...example I use light top/heavy bottom (10-52) on all my guitars except one right now which has a heavy set on it (13-58) for a diferent feel, tone and vibe.

Re: String Gauge??

the scale isnt going to make much difference.

even when im switching from my 24'' jag to my 25-whatever'' strat, i only notice that the strat feels slightly bigger.

Re: String Gauge??

Thanks for the responses guys, I appreciate your advice.

I'll probably put 10's on to begin with, might experiment with 11's at a later date.

Re: String Gauge??

I actually feel, unlike astro, that the scale does make a difference. 9's that feel great on a strat may feel floppy on a short scale type.
I'd try 10's first to see how you like it, but you'll possibly end up with 11s in future.

If it's a tune-o-matic style bridge you can always mess around with the tailpiece height to make the string tension a bit tighter, although you don't want an impacted bridge (oof).
