String guage.

I play in d standard and dro op c. I'm currently using ernie ball 10s. They are great strings but I want heavier strings. I'm thinking 11s. Any recommendation?

Re: String guage.

heavier strings make sense for detuning. i use 11-50 in standard but 11's are a good step up if you are used to 10's as far as brands if you like ernie ball then try an 11 set of theirs like power slinkies or beefy slinky if you want thicker low strings which might be good for you since you drop tune. personally i like dr strings, tite fit 11-50 would be a good set for you

Re: String guage.

depends on your scale lenght:

for a fender style scale (25.5") I'd personally go for 10-52 for drop C
for gibson style scale (24.75") 11-56 would be better

I used to have really heavy gauge strings too but what I realized is, that you want to shoot for something with a heavy bottom for tight rhythms and try to stay slinky on the high strings, to keep soloing action easy.

My personal recommendation is always to go the smallest strings that still work for your tuning when you downtune, if you care at all for your lead playing.

Re: String guage.

I've used 10's, I've used 11's, I've used 12's, and now I'm on 9's. I've also played just about every tuning between standard and drop Ab. For drop C, I like something in the 11-50 range. Dunlops have always been my go tos for strings. They break in easily and they last forever. The EB's have been some of the worst strings I've played.

Re: String guage.

I use D'Addario 11-56 on Drop C on my 25" PRS SE and my 25.5" Ibanezes. Tension could be better on the PRS, but it's not too bad either.

:)

Re: String guage.

From fiddling with string tension pro and trial and error, I've found that a good set of balanced 11s for a guitar with 6 in line tuners is: 11,15,20,30,43,59 if you feel like ordering singles.

Re: String guage.

I usually tune to D standard and I like a set that has 10 ga for the three highest pitched strings and 11 ga for the lowest three.

Re: String guage.

Ernie ball has a few gauges made specially for detuning....heavy, but with a plain 3rd.

+1 Dunlop Strings and the Heavy Core line are those strings that you'd ever expect to perform so well. My new favorites. I was using 11-50 with my last Drop C guitar.

Re: String guage.

I use the 12-56 (the not even slinky gauge) for drop c. Don't really tune to D standard but if I did the 56 would be ok cos I hit quite hard on the lower strings anyway.

Wouldn't use anything lower than a 52 on the bottom string for this.

Re: String guage.

I've always made my own gauge set, it is the only way *my* fingers feel comfortable. True, I am in regular tuning,
But have dabbled for fun in a drop D set up. I still had to make my own set out of singles.
The main point I am even jumping in is I agree with the fellow who said EB's are not very good. They break on me from time to time whereas the D'adario strings just won't break. I clean 'em off (the plain ones) with green scotchbrite every week and they look and feel as if they came right from the factory. I practice on my main guitar and I swear my top E string has not broken in 8 months. It is a 9 but I hit and pull hard when I blatantly copy Albert King.

Re: String guage.

I'm currently using 10-52 for standard and drop d, 12-60 for drop c and 11-70 for drop a and drop B
Hope that helps.

I detest that plain 3rd. I love their strings, but for that reason, I hardly go heavier than the 11-49s.

However, the Ernie Ball 7 string pack (and 8 string) has a wound "G string", you just keep the High E as a spare for your normal guitars.

Another brand I liked for downtuning (B baritone tuning) is Fender 250r. I found the 12-52 set has the wound G string, which I prefer over the heavy plain string.

I use D standard at the moment, with 11 - 49s. I'd been able to get away with 10s at Eb standard, but that extra 1/2 step made them feel too slack.

It took me a while to find something I could get on with mind you!

Re: String guage.

I tune just like you, and I use the Dunlop Zakk Wylde Custom string set: 10-60.
Light higher strings for solos, very heavy lower strings for a tight response.

As intimidating as the numbers might seem, Dunlop strings are kinda slinky in their own, even more so than Ernie Balls.
Their 10-46 string set feels way lighter than others I've tried. So I suggest you try the 10-60s and see how it goes.

Or, if you want something more conservative, try a 10-52 set. Light strings from a 10 set, heavy strings from a 12 set.
I'd avoid cranking the gauge on the higher strings right now if I was you. It's very easy to make that mistake and waste money.

This 11-49 set seems like it would be a good choice.

I find it interesting what other people find comfortable for certain tunings,
11-49 feels too slack for me in standard
