String testing dilemma, what goes where

Adieu

3 somewhat different packs of strings, dilemma which to try where

2018-10-29 17.35.15.jpg
(All identical 10-46 gauge)

Fender strat alder/maple/maple Hotrail & 2x CS69
70s Japanese Les Paul, fairly vintagey but with a maple board bolton
One of the shredders: Jackson RR3 *or* LTD Eclipse mod platform (China lockers, cheap roller bridge, passive Duncans) *or* ESP Eclipse FR actives (but then I kinda wanna keep 11-54s on it)

Any ideas about what to try where? Any rationale for why one of these would perform better in one specific case, but worse in another? Or just place wherever, write down what went where, and buy whichever string was most satisfying for the entire stable next time around?

Re: String testing dilemma, what goes where

Hmm... pure nickel Pure Blues to protect the smallest and oldest frets?

Re: String testing dilemma, what goes where

have you tried the veritas before? i havent but am curious if they are much different

Nope. Just saw them the other day.

Im confused about what it is, some kind of improved nickel plating on steel core steel wound or what?

Re: String testing dilemma, what goes where

I never really heard or saw those brands before. I mainly use Ernie Ball Slinky's 10 - 46 gauge and they work well for me.

Finally tried em

Conclusion: i. ***HATE*** these things.

Soft slinky bendy buzzy ****e. Gonna have to go back in and shim the LowE saddle to keep my preferred low action on the rest of the strings.

Goddamit. They should add "disclaimer: low tension"

Re: String testing dilemma, what goes where

Probably put the Pure Blues on the LP

DR Veritas -Powerful Quantam Nickel --uggg what a bunch of marketing crap. Throw on the Strat and trem them EVH style until they die.

DDT? put on the Jackson because they are made with spider venom and that makes more better for shreddy shreddy rippa.

I dont prefer any of the DRs. especially Pure Blues and the Spider Venom DDTs...(never played Veritas) on average DRS are good strings of course and the do bend nicely (especially the DR Hex Core ones) but they are not as consistent from pack to pack and they dont sound as good as XLs or NYXLs in my opinion which are better strings overall. I played Ernie balls and GHS growing up -but Daddario are better in my opinion than any of the major mfgs.

Anyways -none of this really matters -have a blast!

First impression is that Veritas is fundamentally incompatible with trems... damn things go out of tune if you breathe too hard in their general direction, and readily go sharp when fretted with anything but the lightest touch

Ughhhh...they're well on the way to joining my Undying Hatred list right up there with nasty D'Addarios

Never had such issues with DDTs or Pure Blues

PS ymmv, I *haaaaaate* bendy slinky strings

Re: String testing dilemma, what goes where

I've never really thought any particular string brand could make/break a guitar or its tuning stability (comparing gauge for gauge.)

It's been a *long* time since I tried DR, but I remember not wanting to continue them. I used D'Addarios for a long time until I realized how quickly I was changing them. Switched back to Ernie Ball Slinkies and that's where I comfortably remain. Use the 'Pure Nickel' Slinkies on a couple older instruments where I prize keeping the frets, and use their Reinforced Plain String Slinkies on my Jaguar/Jazzmaster vibratos.

Re: String testing dilemma, what goes where

If I had a penny for every time I broke an Ernie Ball string during a gig. If I traded them out to another brand with equal variables on the same guitar -no issues.

Something about Ernie Ball's formula that made them much more susceptible to breakage in my experience -I can get heavy handed -especially playing live -so this was a big deal for me.

They make a reinforced version? Cool. I've been away so long from EB I was not aware -Have my trumpet blasts about their breaking too easily been heard? :lmao:

Re: String testing dilemma, what goes where

The specific issue with Jaguar Jazzmaster vibratos is the string ball gets pulled on directly; if I use any brand of un-reinforced string, then I'm lucky if the high E lasts two hours before it un-winds.

Even using regular slinkies, I pretty much don't break strings.
