Stringing a righty for a lefty

What advice/pointers do you have for a lefty who learned right-handed, but wants to experiment by doing the Hendrix-thing?

Please note: I've got a variety of guitars -- including several Fender-styles, which I'm guessing would be much easier to flip the nut on and re-intonate than, say, an LP-- and would rather temporarily convert one of them than lay out cash for a lefty at this stage. :)

Re: Stringing a righty for a lefty

on a fender youll need to flip the nut over but everything else is just is just set up. saddle heights, intonation etc...

Re: Stringing a righty for a lefty

Playing is a pain because you always end up rubbing up against the controls on a strat.

Re: Stringing a righty for a lefty

+1 on the control knobs, selector switch and jack socket nuisance factor.

The nut should be replaced with a new one. Often, the bottoms of the string slots are cut so that they fall towards the machine head posts. In this instance, a simple reversal will not suffice.

Re: Stringing a righty for a lefty

very true if its a well cut nut. lots of the ones i see on production guitars are just straight slotted for size

Re: Stringing a righty for a lefty

Take out the bottom tone pot and knob on a Strat it helps, flip the nut, rock out

My serious advice would be, if you can play right handed persist that way, you'll always havre an infinitely better choice of guitars & I'm guessing your fretting hand technique would be formidable.
Otherwise buy a cheap L/H squier or similar to see how you get on before shelling out serious cash, the ergonomics of playing an upside down guitar just doesn't seem an attractive proposition to me

Re: Stringing a righty for a lefty

Cost me $50 to covert a Lefty Dean Z to be strung Righty. New nut and reintonation after turning the bridge around. I had bought the Lefty Z with the intent of learning a song or two and then a Lefty friend bought it and had it for a few years before selling it back. Rather than attempt playing Lefty again I just had it converted. I dig it but the knobs turn backwards. That is the only weird part. Volume is not affected by my arm but I really only play it off and on. It is a conversation when I do bring it out.
