got a new esp eclipse and i have to get a setup and i just recently thought about doing the strings over the stop bar. If anybody has long term usage let me know what you think.

Re: Strings over or under

I've seen this done, however, I've never seen or heard any conclusive proof that it makes a difference. I know the people who do it religiously say that it enhances tone/sustain/magical properties since the stopbar is screwed hard against the top of the solid body (to maintain the correct string angle across the saddles), but again, I've seen no scientific proof of that claim.

I've also seen where people who do it claim that the strings feel more slinky, due to the slightly reduced break angle across the saddles, but frankly, as long as you've got the correct angle across the saddles to achieve proper string tension and thus proper tuning pitch, I still can't see it being anything other than a throwback to the old all-in-one bridge+stopbar units of Ye Olden Days.

Not this again! Use the search to dig up our last to-the-death argument on the subject.

Re: Strings over or under

Depends entirely on the guitar. If it plays too stiff, I'll throw em over. If its fine as is, keep them under.

I don't notice much tonal difference, but I absolutely subscribe to the "slinkier" theory of over-wrapping. In most cases I don't find it to be necessary though.

Re: Strings over or under

Over the top, also like they designed it. Otherwise there wouldn't be ball end recesses on the bridge side of the tailpiece.

Re: Strings over or under

Under? I guess that means through? Unless you mean under the tail piece, in which case neither of the two options.

All this.

Re: Strings over or under

I've been top wrapping my Les Paul. I just wanted to see for myself if it made any difference, after hearing so many people go on about it. I'm still not sure if it's better, but I do like being able to lower the tail piece all of the way down.

Re: Strings over or under

i have my gibby sg strung over the stop bar right now. i hate it. as soon as i get strings its going back to normal

Re: Strings over or under

I do top wrap mainly because Zakk Wylde does and it looks good I don't know whether it does make a difference to the sound or feel of the strings. It certainly doesn't make it any worse. Plus I haven't broken a string since I started top-wraping.

Re: Strings over or under

ive done it both ways, for me it depends on the instrument. there is a difference. some guitars feel better with more or less tension

Re: Strings over or under

It reduces the overall bearing angle on the bridge, which reduces the bearing pressure on the bridge. In laymans terms...it makes the strings a little slinkier which is why I do it.

I dont notice a real change in sustain but I dont sit there holding notes for 30 seconds + very often so it works for me.

Re: Strings over or under

I personally top wrap just cuz I think it looks better and I havent broke a string since I have been doing it. It allows you to lower the bar all the way to the body and maintain a good break angle without having to raise the tailpiece up high, which IMO looks gross. Everything just feels more solid. Win win for me. Its subjective, just like pretty much everything when it comes to guitars.

Re: Strings over or under

I top-wrap because I like the idea of the tailpiece being in contact with the body and the strings fully clear the back of the TOM. It sure as hell can't hurt the sustain. It also does seem to make the strings feel a bit looser but, that could also just be a placebo effect. Who knows. Looks better too, IMO.
