Strings & things

Hi, after reading so many knowledgeable posts I was wondering what you thought of the following problem. Over the past few months I've modded a cheap Tele copy by fitting a 59 neck pickup, initially a Dimarzio Fast Track T bridge (too harsh) then a 59 bridge in a HB-cut bridgeplate. With Dean Markley Nickel steel electrics 11s I get a nice warm sound, the 70s Bad Company vibe I was aiming at (through a Marshall JTM30 by the way), but the intonation is slightly sharp in the first position. I solved this problem with a set of 12s (the gauge on the guitar when I bought it), but the tone became noticeably drier, more agressive. I played with the pickup height but that didn't change things. The 12s were D'Addario XLs. Do you think that the difference in tone is due to the brand or the gauge? I know I could answer this question by going and buying some Dean Markley 12s, but I thought maybe you guys might know stuff that would avoid me wasting strings and save me resetting the intonation for what seems like the 100th time...

Re: Strings & things

How long ago did you change them? Because D'addarios need some time to break in before they sound good

Re: Strings & things

Thanks.

Changed them a few hours before posting, and was too dismayed by the sound to break them in... I should learn about patience sometime.
