Stupid laptop...

My freaking laptop has this junk Vista on it. I'm trying to record on it using Cooledit Pro, but I can't get any sound while I'm playing. The guitar will record and I can play it back, but I can't hear it while I'm playing. I've checked all the mixer settings and nothing is muted and what not....

Any ideas?

Re: Stupid laptop...

cool edit's pretty old - i dunno if it even had that capability to monitor the input while recording.

Re: Stupid laptop...

Are you using an on board sound chip[Inter-grated with the motherboard]?
If so,Is it a "Realtek" AC97 chip?
If it is ,that's your problem. They won't actually run in "Full duplex mode" and allow you to "record and monitor" at the same time.
It's one or the other!
This is because they are cheap nasty crap!:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::rocket::rocket::rocket::rocket:
They're all over the place[computers/motherboards] and they're rubbish.

I would try using another sound "Input /Output" device.Either internal or external.

I'm honestly not sure what onboard chip I have. The laptop is a Dell XPS, but more than likely it is a cheap pile.

I may just go with an external sound card...

Yup, it has the capability, absolutely...

But that's an odd problem... The playback device is set to your soundcard of choice? I guess it is, seeing that you can hear what you have recorded afterwards...
