Sub $200 guitar with 12" radius 22 fret 42mm or 1 5/8" nut Neck? Exist???

I've got an Ibanez from the early 90's with a Viper neck, which I love. I'm looking for a cheap (under $150 or $200 used) 2nd guitar and want something like what I'm used to. The Ibanez has a 12" radius, 22 frets, and from specs on the web a 42mm (1 5/8?) nut, 56mm width at last fret, 19.50mm thickness at nut, 21.50mm thickness at 12th fret. Maybe it's unrealistic for me to expect to find something with all of the specs of the neck I have but I thought you folks might be able to point me in the right direction. A strat or tele copy would be great, but really anything with a similar neck would be good. I played a friend's Peavey Raptor and loved the neck; the shape and satin finish felt wonderful. Those have 21 frets, though. I bought a Peavey Predator sight unseen because they have 12" radius and 22 frets, but then realized the neck was wider (duh). I don't have the Predator yet but I've been playing a Roadstar hat I have around the house for the moment, that has a 1 11/16" nut. I'm realizing how much I appreciate the narrower neck when I go back to playing the Viper neck from the wider neck. I didn't think such differences in dimensions would feel so different. Maybe I should just suck it up and learn to adapt to the wider neck when the Peavey gets here? Or get a Raptor and adapt to 21 frets? But maybe someone knows of something cheap with a 12" radius 22 fret 42mm nut?

Maybe a Dean guitar. Maybe.

I would quit worrying about the numbers and play some guitars in your budget, and buy the one that speaks to you.

The 22 fret models are typically 24.75" scale.

Some people find necks to be the most important part of the guitar. It's a tactile thing. I have a problem with depth perception, so I *really* rely on feel. Nothing beats a C shaped, 25.5" scale neck for me, the thicker, the better. Any time I've gone shorter scale or a different shape, or too thin, it bothered the hell out of me and I had to ditch it.

Usually the difference between 21 and 22 frets is the 22nd fret is on an overhang. If you don't hit that note, you won't notice the difference.

Because you're not going to find a guitar with a Viper neck that cheap? He's looking for an RT series guitar, and they appear to be selling on eBay for $300+. The Wizard neck is completely different.

Here's a list of neck types. 12" radius - 305mm.

Thank you, I will look.

I see the wisdom in that, and I should hit a big guitar store when I can. The reason I brought up the numbers is that I'm trying to quantify what I'm feeling that I like in a neck. I thought if I could figure out the basic dimensions I could narrow down the field.

Yeah, I thought thought the Roadstar would be something I'd like because it they are old Ibanezes with a good reputation for necks, but it dawned on me that it was at least partially the width that felt so uncomfortable. Nice guitar, but when I jump back on the neck I'm used to, everything feels right. I had a Blazer for a while with a more curved radius which was uncomfortable for me. Maybe if I took the time, I'd get accustomed to something else. But I thought there might be an analog to the Viper out there I didn't know of.

I do use 22nd fret and I'm used to that layout. I was hoping to find one with 22 but 21 would probably make my search easier.

I'd go for another Ibanez, but yeah, more than I want to spend. I have an RV, hard to find. I've been trying to figure out what other guitars they made had the viper neck. You mentioned RT... I also think some S series? Maybe I can find a good deal on a beat up one somewhere.

Thanks for the info and input, all.

Man, Dean's website is light on specs. Trying to wade around their forum.

Absolutely. Didn't know about those -- love the specs and the look.

Right? Love to get my paws on one. Can barely find anything about them online.

Yeah, not a bad idea, especially if I want to be really picky. I was thinking along those lines…but just the neck might be more than what I want to spend.

I've been looking at the LTD st-203/213 online and they seem promising. 22 frets, 42mm nut, 13.8" radius. Thin U profile. I don't know about xj frets but I'd like to try one of these. I'm going to try to find one play in a store I can reach. Just a quick look on CL shows one in a nearby state for $200, so I'm imagining something near me might pop up for a good price. Some of the G&L tributes also seem to fit the description of what I'm looking for but I don't see them for under $300 on CL.

For some reason my computer is not accessing this "guitar specs" page. Can anyone relay the thickness specs for the LTD neck if you can view the page?

I see 12" as the radius for the LTDs on some websites, but it seems like the 350mm is the official spec, which is 13.8". There is even an online store that says it's a 12" but lists 350mm in the specs section.

Found this online: "Neck dimensions of the ESP Thin-U neck are 20 @ 1st Fret, 21 @ 5th Fret, 22 @ 12th Fret".

Guess I missed the point, hard for me to understand. My Strats have the same necks and are probably the easiest for me to play, the Les Paul, Telecaster and ES-335 all have different necks and the ES-335 is the hardest to play. However I enjoy playing each of them not only for their different tonal qualities but BECAUSE the necks are different. The variety leads me to different fingering techniques, forces me to reach more and when I go back to the Strats after playing the others I find I can do things a little better. Bottom line I missed the point of the post because it never occurred to me that someone would want the same neck set up. I apologize for getting off the thread track.

All of this input is helpful, thanks for posting. And your point about liking different necks is interesting and something to consider.

This is pretty close: http://www.guitarfetish.com/XV-820-Solid-Ash-Honey-Ash-Finish-maple-Fingerboard_p_980.html

I've owned a couple Xavieres before before, and they're pretty decent. 22 frets (the picture featured doesn't show it, but Xaviere never updates their pictures), 12-inch radius, 25.5" scale length, Telecaster copy, shy of $200. The nut width is 1 21/32" instead of 1 5/8", but is 1/32" really going to matter much? They also have Stratocaster copies for the same price, with the exact same specs.

Hey, thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for. 1 21/32 is actually what I wanted--42mm. I'm seeing some nice Craigslist prices...

+1about the part where necks that a player finds difficult can ultimately improve one's playing...I started on nylon acoustic, then got a very lousy Martin 12-20, which had a neck like a trainwreck ( new guitar, just crap) Then got a very good 6string Yairi that I still have, THEN went electric, got a Gibson 345, so that became the electric neck for me. Then added a 63 Gibson Melody Maker, which was good, got an Ibanez RG450 in '86, which has a narrow neck and for a long time I figured it had the best neck ever. Last year I got a D'Angelico Ex-DC, which is a Gibson 335 in disguise and found that it was as good as ever...I now have no problem changing guitar necks and (lightswitch goes on) all necks are cool, from the thickness of a '51 tele I got to play at a blues jam, to the new Ibby Wizard necks which sort of remind me of Les Paul neck width but with no backside...like the one guy said, find a guitar that speaks to your soul and let the neck thing take care of itself.

Not sure on all of the specs but maybe check out Jay Tursers? They are great bargain guitars!
