Successful rewind of singlecoil, inspired by the story of Mr Duncan's telecaster

A long time ago I tried to change the heights of the pole pieces on my set of Alnico 2 staggered single coils. Of course, now I know, this is a terrible idea.

To cut a long story short, I salvaged most of the wire, and just finished rewinding the bridge pickup by hand. Yes, it took a long time. I did it while watching TV and listening to audiobooks.

It's all working again. I swapped it into my strat bridge position. I had a pickup with Alnico V magnets before, and I think I prefer the midrange of the Alnico 2 magnets. It sounds so great.

Now, I'm wondering if I should try to wax pot it. Is it really necessary?

congrats on the rewind! it takes a lot of patience to do it that way.

if they arent microphonic then i wouldnt bother potting them

Some people (me...I am some people) like the touch-sensitivity, and feedback ease of non-potted pickups. Unless it squeals, and you don't like squeal, then I'd leave it.
