Suggestions for bass recording on a budget

I already have a Focusrite 2i2 which I really like for guitar with my AMT SS-20 cab sim output and now I need to record some bass and eventually drums. I dont have a bass but a friend does so we want to join forces. I have some questions so I can better prepare in advance as my schedule is very limited because of my work. I wanna do my research and homework before we both put the time together into this.

- Would a voice mic be too bad to try to record a bass? Would we break the mic :) by all that low end? i mean, my friend already has a couple of voice mics from his previous band.
- Have you ever recorded a bass direct into a recoding interface with no bass amp or bass preamp in the middle? Is this actually a bad idea?
- I have zero budget for software right now so I am using a laptop with Linux Xubuntu, Hydrogen and Audacity for virtual drubs and real guitar. But I can of course upgrade to ButuntoStudio for a better recording plaform like Jack, Ardour and any other.

So if you know of a good free software on linux that can make my life easier for Bass recording I would appreciate it.

"Yes. Many times. Many, many times."

Can't help on Linux software. I am an Apple Logic user.

Recording bass is a funny thing. It is both an exacting science, and incredibly forgiving. You don't necessarily have to have the same type of elaborate signal path you do as a guitarist, but can probably get away with a little EQing, and maybe a tube emulation plugin for a little fur.

The exacting science part is getting *precisely* the sound you're after. ;)

Here is somebody who seems to know a thing or two about this topic.

It's funny how they use his first take after having him play it there way first.

Lots of times, a DI box would be handy but not necessary. Lots of good videos out there on how to mix it afterwords. The ol' clone the track and manipulate them completely different and blend to taste is a classic technique

I've recorded bass going into an interface and used an amp sim to get the right sound. I can link a sound clip when I get home tonight.

That will absolutely work on the cheap; depending on the sound you're after you may not even need an amp sim. If you're after clean, all you need to process the direct signal is EQ and maybe a little compression.
