Suggestions for Pickups

I run a Radial amp switcher with a Marshal 4x12 79 cab. Have the original 16ohm 55hz Celestions. I use an 79 Marshal JMP 50W for my basic rhythm "channel" and swap to a SLO-100 for leads etc. The Soldano is a new add and has tons of gain. I have 2013 LPJ which has a Mahogany top, similar to a standard. This year also has 2 humbuckers as opposed to typical LPJ single humbucker. Standard in these is the 498T. Was thinking of going warmer/fatter. Suggestions online reading lead me to the SD/Pearly Gates. Any feedback or other suggestions.

Welcome to the forum!

Yes, this is dependent on the kind of music. The Pearly Gates is not really 'warm' or 'fat' at all, though. You might look at one of the Slash-based options for that.

those are two sweet amps. loud to get the tones i prefer though. love that cab! i love the pgb, into nmv amps cranked up it is the sound of rock and roll. i would love it into both those amps.

the 498 is higher output and not paf like at all to my ears so itll be a significant change to go to a pg and probably not the right direction. warmer/fatter would be like custom custom to me

So thanks for all the input..
Describing it its very 90's grunge sounding.. more mellow tho.. as I'm older. :) but thats my era. So if i could do a "wall of sound" in the grunge vein I would be super happy. I do a lot of full chords sometimes power chords.. I tend to like the full spectrum sound of a true Ex. D chord or something etc. (other bands Afghan Whigs/Band of Horses/Zep of course/Soundgarden/AIC) I was talking to a friend that has typically been good at tone on his own setup. His stance was the SLO has so much gain that you can "grab" maybe have one guitar that has a warmer fatter sound (so here I am) however I tried some custom Lollars and OMG they sounded like a brass band.. Couldn't take it and yes they were a much lower output than the 498. So thats my dilema do I go higher output to get the more low end/mid or do I go lower output for warmth.. you guys are great gave me a ton to think about. Maybe this additional info helps. TIA.

The best AIC power chord tone I've ever gotten was from a Les Paul with a JB. Get the height dialed in and it's got "that sound".

A JB works, but I bet a Custom would be better for that sound. Especially in an LP.

i do love a custom in the bridge of a les paul, but its not warmer than the 498. you have two great amps, if it was me, id get a hades gates set. hot paf will kick ass into those amps

A Pearly Gates is absolutely not warm and fa! They are crunchy and aggressive, which sounds like isn't where you want to go. Would suggest the Slash Set or maybe a Custom 5 bridge with a Sentient or WLH neck. The Slash set is just an overwound Alnico II pro set, BTW.

I don't think the Slash bridge is all that warm in the grand scheme of things. It's certainly not warmer than the 498T. When I was into low output PAF-y pickups, I tried one thinking it would be fat and hot, and it was neither.

I think Custom Custom might be a better idea.
