Don't make it a competition. If he wants to show off and be ****y about it, let him. Play your way, with your feelings. It's not the guitar olympics.

All it takes to get better is practice. Play along with some Clapton (Cream especially), songs of your favorite bands. Learn the blues too. It's amazing how one can incorporate the blues in to anything.

Soloing may be one thing, but being solid at rhythm is more important. Look at EVH. Everybody goes on about his lead abilities, but listen to his rhythms. They're some of the best out there. Paul Gilbert is the same way....great...GREAT rhythm player.

Oh yeah, Yngwie has mad rhythm chops. I'm not much in to his stuff but I have much respect for what he does. It's just not my thing.

Am I the only one thinking about Crossroads in this thread? LOL

Hahahaha.Yeah that's right. But when o think of Vai's Bad Horsie ,and how he plays the mighty riffs ,i must say the film is becming more and more funny hehehe!

Well for rhythm guitar, I'd say Metallica and Rammstein are some of the best bands to learn rhythm guitar from.

But yeah dont make it a competetion its all about having fun :)

Hendrix rhythm playing anyone? So loose nice feeling to it and at the same times he had time to do fills and sing, amazing! ;)

He's a great rhythm guitarist, isn't that how he started his career?

Anyway, you might want to check out Alex Lifeson of Rush. He's good at using different chord voicings. That can really help you as a rhythm guitar player if you are good with finding the right one.

He's the ultimate rhythm player. He changes the feel of a piece completely from start to finish, but keeps perfect rhythmic timing. It's kinda ridiculous . . . Little Wing, Axis Bold as Love, The Wind Cried Mary . . . the list goes on and on.

Re: Suggestions to make you a better guitarist

The only way to get better is to practice practice practice. Whether that means jamming along with some challenging music, or doing chromatic exercises or what have you to build speed, practice is the only way. Personally I've been teaching myself sweep picking in the last week or so, starting with a basic 3-string sweep. Also whenever I jam to music it's Lamb of God, or Killswitch Engage, or others. It's surprising how much just working on playing along to some songs can do for you.

Re: Suggestions to make you a better guitarist

Buy a metronome. Marry it.

A nice tuner is also something I'd highly recommend. After getting my Strobostomp, not only do my guitars sound better just because they're in perfect tune, but my ear has gotten much, much better from a pitch perspective, and that alone has helped a ton.

Re: Suggestions to make you a better guitarist

Know the scales. Know them well. Know them backwards. Know them inside out. Improve melodies with them, eventually you'll find stuff that sounds good. Miss out notes, add other ones. Mix these runs up with 'stock licks'. Resolve to the root at the end of a run or a lick to really make your point.
