Re: Suhr....anyone?
I have a Suhr Doug Aldrich set in my Hamer Studio Custom. It's kind of like an LP with a Floyd. At any rate, previous pickups in the guitar were JB and PATB1 in the bridge and 59 and Distortion in the neck. I found the JB a bit harsh and thin and the 59 a bit muddy. I replaced the magnet in the 59 with an A4 with cleaned it up nicely, but it was still a bit low in output compared to the bridge (I like my neck anc bridge to be at just about the same output and then I can dial down the neck if I want since I have independent volumes). I replaced the 59 and JB with a Distortion neck and a PATB1. I love PATB1's and, as expected, it was thicker than the JB, but still with cut. The Distortion in the neck was awesome for high gain playing, but not so good clean and I didn't have the option to split the pickup to get good clean tones either. Anyway, after some searching, I decided to get the Alrich set and it's great in this guitar. The bridge pickup is high in output like the JB and PATB1, but it's much less compressed sounding. The neck is a bit lower output that the Distortion neck and thicker sounding, but it still balanced well output-wise with the bridge pickups, does very well under high gain and cleans up well too. The Suhrs are great pickups in this guitar and I have no plans to switch them out. If I was strictly looking to do high gain stuff, I probably would have left in the Distortion/PATB1 combo (and in fact, this is the combo I'll be using in my "shredder" guitar once I find a used Distortion neck), but the Suhrs are more versatile. Hope that helps you out.
