Super Distortion

I got a dimarzio super distortion last night. Never tried it. I figure i should try these classics before delving into the new stuff.

I put it in my flying v copy with the intention of this guitar being a riffing retro hard rocker and it indeed works. Sounds 70s. Scoop the mids and you get early 80s. A little thin and bright on the high notes. The low notes and low strings are big, especially after adjusting pickup height. Running it on my Randall rd45 head. Needs alot of boost/overdrive to get into almost modern tones.

Will dance with this for a while for more thoughts later.

Next up JB... lol. Jk. Well i never owned one either. I played them at the store...

You're doing great! The Super Distortion is an amazing pickup. The JB too!
Where are you going to place the JB? I believe the Super Distortion is more balanced than the JB with his mid spike (that could become nasal).

Re: Super Distortion

It's a killer rythm pickup to me, best suited in something full-mahogany as an Explorer, V or SG. Has a really nice rough rock tone that works great even for modern high gain applications. Kind of lacks something in the mids though to have a nice lead sound on its own.

Re: Super Distortion

One person's "spike" is another's "cut".

Re: Super Distortion

The super D is a classic for a reason. So many tracks have been recorded with that pickup. Its one of those pickups that I can put it in pretty much any axe and be happy with it. It might not be ideal but ill be happy.

Re: Super Distortion

I ran it thru various models on my positive grid and it definitely sounds better here and there like the marshall tones and my favotite hiwatt tone.

I’d definitely agree with this.

Re: Super Distortion

It's thick, hot, good mids, and more highs than you would think. I happen to find it to not be Uber-hot by todays standards, but still pretty sporty, and way more flexible than people think.

The JB is a way different beast. Looser bass, more mids, more cutting/brighter. More open? Similar Hot factor.

An A8 mag moves a JB towards Super D land IMO....

Re: Super Distortion

I love the JB in a Strat and the Super Distortion in a Les Paul. Killer tones for a lifetime in those two combinations.

Re: Super Distortion

I went through at least a dozen or more bridge humbuckers over the past couple years and then one day I heard KISS, Def Leppard, and Iron Maiden back to back on the radio and realized I love all of those bands' sounds. So I bought Super Distortions for two of my guitars and stopped looking. Any pickup that worked for Boston AND Al Di Meolo AND Curt Cobain is dang well good enough for me.

And Ace's description is dead-on. Thick, full, surprisingly clear, and somewhere in the medium hot range. Sounds good split, too.
