So i'm thinking of upgrading my current ibanez s470 for a better super strat. I've looked at Ibanez, LAG, Jackson, ESP, Suhr and Caparison. Any other suggestions. Right now I was particularly interested in getting a soloist, so wondered if anyone had compared the SL3 witht he SL2H. the SL2H is american made so guaranteed to be that bit better but it is nearly twice as much :/ All help is much appreciated.
Peace

Who guarantees that the MIA is better than the MIJ?

It has a couple little details changes such as ebony instead of rosewood and different inlays. I'm not going to bet on it sounding or playing better.

Re: Super Strats-Jackson SL3 vs SL2H

Funny you should ask. I own an SL3 and an SL2HT. A bit of a caveat: The SL2HT is the tune-o-matic model, not the Floyd. But I've played USA Soloists with Floyds.

The SL3 is a great guitar, no doubt about it. It's a good stopping point if you don't have the money to spend on an SL1 or SL2H. Mine is an older one from when the translucent finishes had chrome hardware, and the trem was a Jackson-branded low-profile Floyd-licensed piece. Now I think they use a Korean-made variant on the OFR. I took off the Jackson trem and put on a German OFR with a 32mm brass block from the Floyd Upgrades site.

It's kind of heavy, fairly meaty-sounding, and has a dark top end. It plays great; the neck shape is very comfortable for me, and I can play as fast on it as I've ever played on anything else. With the standard-issue Hot Rails neck & middle and the JB bridge, it's probably the most versatile guitar I own and definitely a favorite.

The SL2HT is a crunch machine. It's a different animal. Quarter-sawn neck, ebony board, real MOP inlays, cool binding, better fretwork, lighter, more responsive, more resonant. When I play stuff like what you hear on Megadeth's Rust in Peace, it's the one guitar I have that gives me that tone -- no excuses, no compromises. I've basically experienced the same thing with other USA Soloists -- SL1's and SL2H's with Floyds. Great, great guitars. One possible issue I've seen is that some of them, for whatever reason, don't have the strings properly centered between the edges of the fretboard. Without a bolt-on neck to adjust, I suspect that fixing such guitars may be a non-trivial matter. Barring that, I love the USA Jacksons.

The difference isn't worth missing a mortgage payment, though. If you can't spend the extra money, the SL3 is great. If you can spend it, check out the USA Soloists.

Go for used usa soloist. Jacksons have much tighter tolerances than ESP's and they look more awesome. To me atleast, looks make a big difference; music is an form of art and it's supposed to look good. Compared to the cheaper models USA model jacksons have a bit better building quality and being handmade and transfers to cleaner sound with lower string action. They are simply more fun to play.

The old Jackson Japanese Soloist XL's are excellent guitars, nearly indistinguishable from their American Counterparts.
I would say that the the newer American Soloists are far away better than the current Japanese models.
Hope to have one someday.
Till then, I'm using a 90's Japanese Soloist XL Pro.

Re: Super Strats-Jackson SL3 vs SL2H

Jackson SL2H all the way. I have a Bengal soloist.

Never was interested in the SL3.

The older MIJ Soloist PRO models are worth having (any PRO model).

Re: Super Strats-Jackson SL3 vs SL2H

Jacksooon!!!!. I had the chance to try the Jackson SL2H out and it is amazing. I have no idea about SL3 though but Japanese Jacksons are also very well built.

Electronics and fingerboard will be different in SL3. I am not sure what else...

Re: Super Strats-Jackson SL3 vs SL2H

SL3 = Cheap crap.

SL2H = Hotness

The SL2H is one of the MOST comfortable guitars out there. They practically play themselves.

If you have the money go for the USA soloist. They are expensive but they are worth every penny. If you can't afford a new USA I would go used before you buy the mij soloist. IMO nothing beats a USA Jackson.

That assumes you can find one with a non-embarrassing color/graphic. I don't troll the used market as much as a lot of you guys do, but it seems a disproportionate number of the used MIA Jacksons I see have finishes that I might have liked at age fifteen, if at all.

Still, I'd buy a used one if it were in nice shape and had a finish and feature set that I liked.

Re: Super Strats-Jackson SL3 vs SL2H

Both Floyds?
What finishes?

Yeah, both Floyds....one is actually a SL2H-MAH, mahogany body/neck, with a flamed maple top in transparent green. The other is a regular SL2H in Acapulco Gold (cool color, kind of greenish all the way to bright gold depending on the light)

Does the mahogany one sound any more like a Les Paul than a regular Soloist?

I'd love to get a 22-fret archtop; that might be the bury-it-with-me guitar.

Hmmm, the -MAH does have a darker tone centered more in the low mids than the snap and bite of the alder/maple. I would say it leans more towards an LP tone more than a typical super strat tone. For some it could be the best of both worlds.

I ended up really liking the EMG 81/60 the best in that guitar, they seem to compliment the mahogany in a fashion that I like.

The stock JB and '59 were just too dark and undefined in that guitar for what I like (but I love that combo in the alder/maple minus the tone control).

Re: Super Strats-Jackson SL3 vs SL2H

I voted Ibanez because I think the necks are more comfortable. I used to own a couple of Jackson SL2H's and really liked them but the neck just felt kind of flat and stiff to me. Ibanez necks are super fast and feel more natural in my hands which is ironic since I bought the Jacksons because they have the reputation of having the most comfortable necks.

Also the tremolos are more adjustable and easier to change strings and tune on Ibanez trems. FR trems take so long to tune after you put on new strings. I can do it in about 1/2 the time with an Ibanez.
